Felixstowe ferry golf club

I'm a keen links player my trouble is I don't get out on them enough! Having recently been browsing at a few that I could potentially join as a country member/second club I came across felixstowe ferry golf club. They are doing a deal of £380 if you join the course as your second club, I also think you need to live over 50 miles away.

I wonder how do people rate the course? What's the set up there like, can you always get a time on Saturdays etc?? Realistically I would only play once a month but more over the summer months as I would have to travel a bit to get there. However within saying that I wouldn't mind the travelling knowing in the back of my mind I was in store for a good round.

The course has been recently voted into the top 100 in England by golf world, so it must be liked by quite a few.

It is a great club but very tough for me as a non links player. The fairways were in fabulous nick (though I must confess to playing very few shots from them. However, it is not all Coastal as only I think holes 1-2 and 13-18 run along the sea front with the rest tucked inland. The 12th is a strange hole played over a road which clearly never used to bisect the course. The 13th is tough with the elevated tee played at the highest point of the course to a fairway about a gnats todger wide with the wind blowing in from sea. Fish n chips in the clubhouse aren't too shabby either. The greens had been hollow tined when I went but they will roll fabulously.

Depends on how far you need to travel as I think the Green Fee is about £40, so will you visit it enough to get your money's worth? Felixstowe's always a little further than you think. HTH

Tiger has said it all really, nice friendly place and 27 holes.

I liked the place as my first taster of links golf and at £380 a year, you only have to play it once a month to make it pay...tempting.

Top course. Only played it the once on a golf break a couple of years back but it sticks in the memory. Not true links but lovely nonetheless. It was also in pristine condition when we played it.

Howdy newbhoy, Felixstowe is my home course, I have been a member for around 18 months and really love the course. The guys that have commented so far have it spot on. But just like to add a few more comments.

If you plan on playing on Saturdays i would suggest going out after 9.30am, prior to that it can get a bit stacked up, although 5 hour rounds just dont tend to happen here which is a good thing

The fairways and greens have been in great shape all year, apart from the dry spell we had during April/May, but i think most courses suffered from a lack of water during that time.

You have the added bonus of a 9 hole course (Kingsfleet) which has some great holes, the 3rd & 6th being the stand outs.

As with most 'links' if the wind is blowing, the course can become very tricky, and it's very rare not to play without a breeze of somekind. Winter can be harsh here, so if you play from November to March you will need to put the layers on.

Beer and food is always good and you have plenty of choice, plus the added bonus of accomodation in the form of a couple of flats in the main clubhouse should you bring some mates and want to stay over etc.

I'm a little biased, but i love the place, feel free to ak any questions and i will hope to answer them honestly

I would be travelling from near London so it's quite a decent journey, hence I would only play once a month, however I would plan to play more often in the summer taking a midweek day off and heading up, added to that stay overnight 2-3 times in the summer playing each day, make a bit of a weekend of it. So your talking about 20 rounds in total (overnight stay you could play 36 then 18 the next day or visa versa) so that adds up the rounds, making it 19 a round.

Got it, so best to tee off around 10 on a Saturday for a 4ish hour round? Like most clubs, I'd say Saturday morning times most fill up quick?

Also does the road play a big factor through the course? I see on the course planner if you stray left over the road on the 1st your OB and the same for a few other holes.

howdy, sorry for delay, havent logged in the last few days.

10am Saturday is a good time to play, very unlikely to take you 4 hours, but factor it in just in case. There is a Saturday club that tees off at midday, all are welcome to join in.

The road is only really an issue on the first, as you say, this is OB, but dosent realy come into play on any other hole if i'm honest, and there is plenty of room on the first fariway and right of it
You have to hit over it on the 12th (Short par 3) but again, not much of an issue.

That's good to know about the Saturday club, when you can just turn up and play. I see from the fixtures list there are the occasional midweek competitions also which is great for keeping things competitive. I take it there must be lots of 'second club' members?

Your on the second club membership also, do you play there often? I must admit the one thing I'm most apprehensive about is actually getting there and playing the course given that I am quite active in my home club but I would be happy to play there twice a month.

Tiger - if I join and it's looking likely your more than welcome than for a game. We'll get something organised

hi .. i'm a full member now, but at the price quoted its a real bargain, but depends on time etc, nice option to have if you fancy a change though
