MPs have privately said they want a pay rise, with the majority calling for a 32% increase that would take their annual salary to £86,250.

more than a third believe they should keep generous final-salary pensions.

Tories said their salary should be £96,740, while Lib Dems thought the right amount was £78,361 and Labour £77,322. Other parties put the figure at £75,091 with a fifth of those questioned saying they should be paid £95,000 or more.

I make that £236 per day, every day plus expenses.

All about the context though.
They were asked to complete an anonymous poll (that is all it was, it wont actually happen) Who wouldnt like more money?

I think they should actually get a pay cut and see who hangs around.

Probably like the most of the working country, I've now not had a pay rise in 6 years and if there's not one forth coming this month or next it'll be 7 years.

Hell with a 32% pay rise I wouldn't know what to do with the money, ohhhh hang on.....yeah play more golf :D and I'm sure HID could get rid of a few pounds, as well as spend the extra cash.

Its a can of worms this one

On the one hand, MP's are public sector workers and should be treated the same ie pay freezes etc

On the other it seems silly that an MP who represents a constituency of many thousands and who collectively is in charge of the country, should be paid less than a head teacher of a average sized school or a solicitor in a medium sized practice. (not taking anything away from teachers OK)

If you dont pay them properly, a few might become open to "Outside influences" . Its certainly a job that does not appeal to me at all. You might lose at the next election, so no job security, you might have to travel to London from your consistuency and stay away from your family for 5 days a week (some may think this a bonus).

You have to be super squeaky clean, 1000% of the time, Swear on the golf course and its a resignable offence

I dont like MPs, but until we can come up with another system we are stuck with them, But they do need their pay to reflect the responsibilities they hold

The poll conducted by IPSA was to see what they thought they were worth. These are the same MP's who voted for no increase. Once again its the media putting a spin on something...

It doesn't matter what they get paid, for all I know they could have been getting £100K already.

It won't be affecting my life so I won't be moaning about it.

In my opinion I think they are underpaid. £80K, £90K?.... it's all the same.

I have always believed that MP's are underpayed. Compare thier salaries to GP's, police inspectors and senior council officers

They are not at all badly paid if you take into account the expenses, pension, outside directorships and the fact many are set up for lucrative post-MP careers getting very well paid for exploiting their networks.

I'm of this belief on their basic salaries however what they can claim in expenses it appears they appear to pay for very little on their own, eg council tax, newspapers, meals etc. therefore their salaries are almost just speeding money.

I wouldn't fancy their jobs, far too much hassle.

Put their salary up to c£75k-£80k as it is a very long hours and quite a stressful job, however, remove their expenses which was Maggies way of giving them an increase without an official pay rise at that time- the expenses are abused and certain MP's actually make a profit on expenses, they should be ONLY for money actually paid out by the individual in the pursuit of their official role, accompanied by a legitimate receipt.

£45600 - £49500 is nothing compared to the Mp's.

These are the same people who are attacking my pension and wanting meto work longer to supplement their income. Absolute joke.

I just gave it the 'stone wall test' and said to my mate that MP's are earning £120K and want a 30% raise is that too much to ask.... he said it was too much but didn't bat an eyelid at the fact that I said they earned £120K.... so it came as a surprise when I told him their salary really was £66K and then he had no choice to realise how judgemental [read PATHETIC] we all are sometimes.

Let's face it, we all just like to moan, well the majority [read MOB MINDED] do.

Salaries are what ever, expenses are scandalous. If I drive my car for work, I get 43p per mile (I think). If an MP drives, they get more. Much more. And every individual in the car can claim the same. Why? How does being a passenger in a car justify 60 odd pence a mile when the driver (whose car it is) is getting this too?

It is a strange one. We are losing nurses who claim living in Reading is too expensive and who haven't had a payrise in several years. We have similar in police, fire, ambulance service who are all in high risk, high stress jobs and haven't seen pay go up and in fact with cost of living rises are actually worse off. Add in teachers, etc and there are loads of seemingly deserving professions.

However there are arguments as others have pointed out that being an MP isn't always as much of a dream ticket it is painted to be. My personal view is that if they are going to give themselves a rise, be realistic and keep it down to 10% which I feel wouldn't anger as much. I think most people see 30+% and the hackles rise automatically

Since most MPs are just pedarii who do as they are told, and only those in government or shadow posts are expected to work. By all means increase pay but slash numbers and still save the taxpayer money.

If you only want rich Toffs as MPs then pay low salaries. If you want people that have the ability to make it in business and the professions then you must pay the going rate to attract them.
