My club is built on old orchards so there are loads of golf ball sized apples lying in the long grass. Can I hit one of those apples on a practice swing to see how it comes out of the rough?

This is genius if allowed!

Don't see why not as long it doesn't alter the conditions affecting the swing. Not sure you'd learn very much though, 1) the apple won't be the same density as a ball 2) the lie is unlikely to be precisely the lie of the ball 3) the apple will most likely break up on impact.

Agree, seems a pointless thing to do - unless you want a bit of ‘fun’

Conkers - with the spiky cover still there.

Pine cones.

Done them all. Great fun.
I always hit them away from the green, of course.

Tend not to do apples - risk of being messy as Colin says.

It was not entirely serious, I wasn't expecting to check the yardage or how much spin I’d get.. I won’t do it , not in a comp anyway. .

Clarification 5.5a/1

Practice Stroke with Ball of Similar Size to Conforming Ball Is Breach

A "practice stroke" under Rule 5.5a covers not only hitting a conforming ball with a club but hitting any other type of ball that is similar in size to a golf ball, such as a plastic practice ball.

Striking a tee or natural object with a club (such as a stone or a pine cone) is not a practice stroke.

Few years back at a xmas event I happened across a large bauble on the fairway (must've dropped off a decorated cart) anyway I took driver, it was a bit messy but satisfying
