So I was at the range last night, they do an informal group coaching session, where you get to use all the teaching kit, albeit briefly as it is a group session. Anyhow, I went into the video room and they had an explanar device, I mentioned I'd not used one before and the coach said it may be a good idea to give it a go, so we got it setup, and I had a few swings.

It felt very weird, but it did help in getting my sequencing correct, then I hit a couple of balls and the difference in my swing path, by replicating what I had just done on the explanar was chalk and cheese on the video replay, before, I was fishing or chopping wood, after my swing actually looked like a proper golf swing.

However the downside is, in using the explanar, the resulting twisting and contorting of my body has left me with a very sore chest, right down the middle. I suppose it just goes to show, that what I was doing in my swing before hand, the horrible out to in fly fishing technique is/was utter rubbish and following what explanar has shown me while it hurts now has given me the insight that I can get and in to out path and the ball going where I'm lined up, rather than straight left, or sliced right.

Now where's that ibuprofen...?

Seen it down at the course but always thought it resembled some kind of torture device

Its like saying this is how Beckham <<insert generic footballer>> took his free kicks, unless you replicate this you cant play football!

My local course has just got one and I must say I am tempted. But as you say, there is a danger that it is trying to teach you the perfect positions instead of functional ones for your specific swing.

Never used one but would like to have a go, the hurting is because you start using muscle not used before I had the same thing when I changed my left hand grip the muscle in my forearm killed for a couple of weeks until i got used to it.

Some pros swear by them, others, including my current coach, think they're useless & can destroy your swing. I had a go a while ago & it was a revelation. I take back the club far too much on the inside & the correct plane felt completely wrong. Mind you, if your swing tends to be on the flat side, I think the machine needs to be set as it normally is, then flattened out a bit. This is what "One Plane Swing" instructor Jim Hardy advises.

I intend to have another try some time, just to see low the new backswing is shaping up.

Apart from the soreness, it gave me the feeling of where the club should be on the down swing. Now I do not think there will be any chance of me getting into the same position the explanar gets me in, when I'm doing my normal swing, well not 100%, but by showing me how I should be swinging, if I can capture just 50% of a decent swing then hopefully, I should end up with a ball flight in the direction I want the ball to go, not where it wants to go. Well that is once my chest recovers.

I know 3 that lie outside gathering moss, and two at two driving ranges they use to dry towels!

Wonder if it could help Furyk:whistle:
