As per an earlier post I have been in contact with a number of clubs over the last few days to get basic information about membership. I was honestly surprised about some of the responses received considering the climate.

A number of clubs were charging joining fees of £1000 to £1500 (some equivalent to a year and a half's membership and some wanted this up front).

The more corporate clubs seemed to spend more time in their responses extolling the virtues of their gym facilities than their golf courses despite my having shown no interest in going to a gym (and have not been in one for many a year)

One club insisted that unless I had a low handicap then I had to be weekday member for 3 years but might be invited to play at the weekend sometimes if I pay a green fee.

All bar 1 club gave no details on the course, the comps, the roll ups or, in fact, anything beside the fees.

If it was not for one response I would have been pretty disappointed with the attitude of most clubs. Then I got a response from St Thomas' Priory in Lichfield. Never heard of them before and will only find out what the course is like when I visit but they were the only club who invited me to visit and try the course. Furthermore, they noted that I was relocating and ensured me that they would make sure there were plenty of playing partners for me if I knew nobody and explained their comps were drawn so as there were further opportunities to meet members.

Maybe the clubs I contacted were not looking for members and were set up for the coming year but I was a little stunned at the lack of interest, the presence of high joining fees and the lack of interest in promoting the club or the course over other gimicks.

May just be me being naive but, excepting the one club who have raced to the top of my list to try, I left the whole experience of trying to find a new club a bit disappointing.

When I joined my new club recently in Leeds the secretary made no bones of the fact that even the 'posh' clubs in Leeds are allowing the ahem! ordinary golfers into the clubs to boost membership. Many clubs are struggling to make ends meet. I'm surprised at the trouble you are having. What's the situation at your clubs?

No idea on the position with the clubs that I contacted as I am moving out of area. Current club has membership spaces but not that many and to be honest would not leave if was not moving.

Most of the clubs around here despite being expensive are still doing a lot to attract new members (deferring joining fees, 7 day memberships straight away etc) and almost all will offer a viewing and at least nine holes.

Why are you leaving your current club and what are you looking for from a new one. I have a number of criteria I'd look for if I changed and would only pick somewhere that met all (or most). For the amount it costs to be a member certainly around here then I want the most I can for my money from the golf course. I'm not interested in a gym, pool etc

I was looking at joining Headingley GC, the manager called back and just advised me to "look around North Leeds clubs" and if I wanted to try Headingley to give him a ring.

Moortown, Moor Allerton and Sandmoor in Leeds are the types of clubs you have have to be Cat 1 or rich to get in, they still haven't changed and I doubt they will. I know some middle of the road clubs like Cobble Hall and Scarcroft have dropped their joining fees and are generally open to any handicap.

I like playing at the Muni, there is no snobbishness and most of the members are nice. The main point I like is it has a social side and its more like a family rather than somewhere to play golf.

I can't quite work out what your point is, apart form you'll probably join St Toms....there are a number of 'good' courses in that area, who by nature charge a joining fee because they can justify it and if you don't want to pay (and I am in the not paying it camp) it then go play down the road.....

i do find that hard to beleve that clubs are like that it would make you think about joining them and giving over your cash

not to many clubs like that over here

get a job over the water

Interesting thread here. It just goes to show that up here in Scotland we are far better off in our choice of club and course. There are probably only a small minority of courses now that have waiting lists and a small number who still have full joining fees.

Golf is a working mans game up here, dthe further south you go, the more pretentious and middle class it becomes. Scary really.

Im not being funny but im glad i dont live down south with all the snobbyness and the got to be cat 1 to play at a certain club thing going on.

Pretty much what I want to avoid. What I am looking for is a friendly club where I will have no problem finding a game at the weekend and an interesting course. Thing is few of the clubs I contacted tried to sell their course or atmosphere to me.

I had a similar experience when i contacted childwall gc in liverpool they wanted a £1k joining fee then £950 subs and i'd be on a trial 6day membership for 9months.I wouldn't be able to play satudays comp day neither.

I didn't mind paying the joining fee and subs but straight away i felt uncomfortable and found somewhere else with a good set up and good laugh in the clubhouse.

So true fella, its why I like Municipal golf at the moment. There is a massive difference in subs in Scotland as well I believe as to the test of the UK.

Is it true most of the courses in Scotland are Muni's?

So could you join Portrush, Portstewart, Royal Belfast, RCD as a 7 day member tomorrow without paying a joining fee?

Strange one this, and while I cant defend the apparent dis-interest shown to you, it is quite obvious that they arent 'needing' new members.

My own course is the same, and there is still a Joining Fee equivalent to 1st yr subs. admittedly payable over 3yrs if you wished.

However, even with all that, I would'nt dream of playing my golf at a Muni, i recall those days when I first started playing, and it was rubbish.
People playing in jeans, football shirts, and hacking all over with no experience at all and most importantly, no idea of etiquette in the least.

Ok, that's in Hull, and maybe I'd wrongly assumed that most Muni's would be the same !!

I wouldnt choose your club based on the reception of the Secretary, but rather on the Course that you like, surely ? I'm pretty sure my own place probably comes across as 'indifferent' and possibly rather 'eliteist' to enquiring members, it certainly was when I joined 20yrs ago, but I still love the course and wouldnt move anywhere else locally.

You'll find people to play with wherever.....surely ?
