Why do the MP's sound like they have a choice regarding repaying their expenses. By repaying do they think that they are getting back into the good books of the tax payers, if they were ever there in the first place?

This I don't get.

Either they are entitled and have acted within the rules, or, they have acted illegally, and should be prosecuted. Paying it back is a nonsense.

Change the rules by all means, but what has gone on is history.

Most of those paying it back are doing so because they hve been found out, not because they disagree with it.

It's a disgrace to be frank - they should be up on charges of fraud. Heard today that if an MP re-wins their seat they are elibable for the Parliamentary pension, so we now know their motives...

if the expenses were within the rules (unethical but legal) then paying anything back is voluntary, so yes they have a choice.

two things from this -

if Cameron does sack an MP who does not repay will he be taken to tribunal for unfair dismissal?

anyone noticed any bankers paying anything back?

I'm confused.
On Monday, Blears insisted she hadn't done anything wrong, but 24hrs later she's waving a cheque about like some kind of reverse lottery winner saying she's paying back £13K.
What changed in a day?
If she wasn't wrong, then she shouldn't be paying it back surely?

Oh...Hold on..I think I've worked it out.

The people who sanction these payments should be held accountable aswell as the politicians.I know they have to follow rules but surely they can challenge any claim they feel is extortionate.

If the Old Bill nab a burglar, all he has to say is 'OK, I'll pay it all back,' then presumabley everthing is OK and he'll get off. That's how it works now.

I can't stand that smiley woman....far too smug for me.

I look forward to seeing her political career in tatters......one can live in hope.

£141,000 not enough for her???

Maybe she wasn't any good at law....a partnership in a good firm would pay much more....

most of those headlined might have morals that an alley cat would despise but they haven't actually broken any laws.

one mp who was still claiming for a mortgage two years after it was paid off and for a 'second home' while he was renting it out to a fellow mp must surely be done for fraud.

they can't all get away with the 'I'll pay some back' ploy can they?

Agreed. Laws have been broken. That's a fact.

On radio 2 yesterday there was a supposed 'expert' suggesting that a police investigation would cost the tax payers too much money, and they would only confirm that the mps have been correctly claiming allowances. The thing is that allowances, and expenses are different.

Well, I for one would feel a darn sight better if I felt that the politicians who ran our country on our behalf didn't think they were above the law.

I'm seeing nothing at the moment that suggests that. I don't think it's too tricky. Claiming £16k for a mortgage that doesn't exist is fraud. The fact that he's claiming it was an oversight is irrelevant.

Claiming expenses for 2 properties is fraud.

Claiming a second residence is your primary residence is at best tax evasion. In itself a crime, irrespective of the whole expenses debate.

The actions from the leaders really does seem like they are doing the minimum they can, hoping that we'll let them get away with it. They don't want to punish anyone, but I'm sure they'll find a scapegoat or two, and try and brush the rest under the carpet

This whole thing stinks. The thing is its not just MP's and expenses to blame, the whole becoming an MP as a career choice and not with the idea of doing it to serve the people no matter how much the cash, the same can be said for teachers, in the past 20 years its become an easy option after a degree, a job with excess holidays, steady pay and no real desire for the job which shows in class room discipline except the perks with obvious exceptions.

I have totally lost faith in this certain aspects of society. We have bankers, CEO's, MP's & the rest who are creaming this country to the limit yet we have nurses not that far from minimum wages and an NHS which has to try and back track 20 years to get standards back to how they where before civil servants made a meal of it. Its not just nurses its throughout society from the Armed forces to care assistants, all under paid and none jobs over paid.

What can you do hey? Nowt but make the best in or what we have and play as much golf before the big triple boggy in the sky.
