Just a quick one that caught my eye yesterday.

Have you ever looked at a leaderboard for a European Tour event and bothered to scroll to the bottom? Most people obviously look at the leaders, but take a look at those who are last in the group:

It's pretty common for there to be a number of rounds of 84 - 90 in there. 90?!?!? For a professional golfer on the European tour? 20 over par?!?!

Is it just me who looks at this and thinks 'how can you be on the European Tour and end up scoring 90?'

Any ideas? I would ordinarily say it's a bad hair day, but it's pretty normal for the worst rounds to be around 84 - 90 it seems which seems exceptionally bad for a pro?

There's hope for us all!

Have a look at the medal results in your club. There will be a similar spread.

Some of the Pro's are better than the rest. Same as us.

It is poor though. You would have expected a narrower distribution.

this week better than most, 3rd last shot 76, Oliver Fisher shot 80  and an amateur shot 84 so the spread actually what you would expect really

a lot of the big scores often come from amateurs or those who get sponsor invites/exemptions, inclding poor old Micael Campbell far too often

There comes a point during the round where making the cut becomes impossible. They will either start working on things during the round, hitting certain shots in preperation for the following week or generally trying to rush through the round so they can get the early flight out of there.

Many of the European tour events have local qualifiers and sponsors invitations (some of whom are amateurs). There are also some players well past their best who qualify due to past glories e.g. Michael Campbell(by way of major) and Barry Lane (Top 40 all time money).
It is often golfers in these categories that are at the bottom of the field. Look how many at those South African events that are near the bottom are locals.

I'm sure there was an event last year, can't remember where or even which tour, where a guy played on his own teeing off first because of a drop out.

He wasn't in contention and just went round as fast as he could. Can't remember what he scored, but his round took about 1hr 50mins iirc.

On a Saturday and Sunday if the first out is a single player they are offerred a local pro to play with them as a marker. Often this is refused as the players have been known to have a bet on how quickly they can get round. I believe the record is sub 2hrs though do not know who holds it.

I think I'm sure there was an event last year, might have been the year before, can't remember where or even which tour, where a guy or it might have been a girl, played on his/her own or with someone else teeing off first or maybe second because of a drop out or a DQ.
Hope that helps

 :D ;)

Just for you Bob

SHEBOYGAN, Wisconsin (AP) -- Jeff Overton pumped his fist Sunday and broke into a wide smile when he finished the PGA Championship.

He is virtually a lock to make his first Ryder Cup team. But that wasn't the cause of his mock celebration.

Playing alone in the first group off when ailing Ian Poulter withdrew, Overton walked 18 holes at Whistling Straits in 2 hours, 9 minutes, to break the PGA Championship record for quickest round.

"Awesome! My first record at a major," Overton said.

It beat the previous mark -- by one minute -- set by Phil Blackmaar at Crooked Stick in 1991.

I'm fairly sure there is or at least was some kind of ban for shooting a certain number over par in a tour event. I'm sure I heard that a while ago but could have made it up :D

It's on the LPGA, that's why (allegedly) Michelle Wie dropped out through "injury" 3/4 way through her round en route to a 90+!!

I guess that's why the R&A stiffened up Open entry to prevent Maurice Flitcroft reincarnates from shooting 150+. I knew there was a limit on the LPGA and some discussion at the time just how injured Wie was but I don't think the mens tour will introduce it anytime soon.

Everybody is entitled to a few bad rounds (or seasons in Michael Campbells case) and for the most part if you have one you'll back to Q school and more than likely off the tour next year. I hope Di Stewart is on plenty of overtime as hubby could be in trouble with the scores he's racking up lately
