Etiquette Question

On the 15th yesterday, I pulled my tee shot left, over a line of mounds and into some fairly thick rough. Once we walked to the area it went and couldn't see it straight away, I turned and waved the group behind through. Whilst they were hitting their drives, I found my ball and they didn't seem to be making any rush to move up to their balls, so I hit out of the rough and as they were still nowhere near their balls, myself and my playing partner (we were a 2ball, they were a 4) carried on playing.

What is the correct thing to do in this situation, as I wasn't sure? Once you wave someone through, should you wait, even if you find your ball and there is time to play it and move on before they get to theirs?

If they weren't in any particular hurry to play through, I would have most probably hit my ball (as you did) and then re-evaluate the situation.
If they were still taking their time getting to their second shots, I would have played out and let them through on the next hole or later on.
If they had been ready to play, I would have let them through at that time and just explained to them as they passed what I had done.

Pretty much what Smiffy said.
The book says once you have called through a group you shouldn't hit a another shot until the group is out of range or finished the hole.
