Equality During Comps

Not sure if anyone else has raised this but apparently as some muppet in Brussels has decided that during competitions both men and woman should have the right to tee off in a slot reserved for general play. So therefore now a lot of members can't play in comps anymore as they can't get their names up as comp times are reduced and guys who are going out after this slot are being held up in the comp behind fourballs. Apprently its also to let some of the women tee off as well which i find a bit strange during a mans comp ?
Anyone else heard of this ging on their club
 
It was nothing to do with Brussels actually. I think you are refering to Harriet Harman's "baby", the Equality Act. It means that you can have a competition that's Gents only or Ladies only as sporting activities are exempt. However you cannot say that only men can play on a Saturday or only women on a Thursday etc. There's a lot of fuss about it in golf circles but in reality it's mostly common sense. If I was a full member of somewhere and I wasn't allowed to play for half the weekend because of my religion, skin colour or sex for that matter then it's obviously (IMHO) wrong.
 
Ok point taken, but we have ladies day on Tuesday and they tend to have their comps on a Sunday. I have nothing against lady golfers - far from it - especially Paula Creamer but if you are a full fee paying member who works 5 days a week (to pay for his subscriptions) how would you feel if you weren't allowed to play in comps. It would be better to let the ladies to enter all the comps off the white tees (same as men) as there are far fewer of them (sadly a fact)
If it was a 50 - 50 split then fair enough no issues but when your membership is about 90% - 10% how can this be fair ?.
Interesting to see if other clubs will adopt this.

BTW Harriet Harman - a complete waste of human being - what has she ever done for anyone a part from herself. She probably only did this to raise her public profile higher

Isn't it down to fees - if both are paying the same for 7-day membership then it is wrong in either case to then say 'but you can only play 6 days because Tuesday is Ladies day / Saturday is men's day'. It's wrong either way.

 
The ladies at our club have a 5 day membership.
Christmas eve, boxing day, New years eve, Easter Sunday and pancake Tuesday which I think is fair. ;)

Yup we have this at ours. There is usually a gap left for general play AND the ladies comp in the middle of the gents comp. Ladies have an hours about 12.30 to 1.30. Mind you, that is because we don't have enough men who want to play in the comps so they wouldn't fill up the whole day anyway. The ladies don't even fill up their hour most times. The gents who play in the afternoon don't start unil 2.30. Everyones happy.

Several of those days require a decent meal to be cooked

May I suggest St Georges Day and each Bank Holiday Monday

This is a law that is coming in right now, and will affect a lot of clubs. It is being discussed at County level on it's implimentation. This new Equality Act has come from Brussels, and it is aimed particularly at sports clubs that are set up for the majority sex. It does state that the mens and ladies must be equal (pay the same, and get a vote), and that there must be equality for equal play at weekends.
This is a major issue with a lot of golf clubs at the moment, particularly the implementation. A lot of ladies (not all, particularly the full time working ladies)are happy with their status quo, but the clubs cannot stay like this, with these new laws coming in.
This topic will most likely become a major talking point in clubs over the next year.

As an ex lawyer I'm finding this quite interesting. So I've tried to find the actual legislation online to see how it will affect most clubs rather than rely upon rumour and gossip.

Interesting results will be;-

Genuine men or women only clubs will not be effected (so long as that is written into their constitution) Muirfield?

Ladies and gents subscriptions must be the same.

Number of competitions for men and women should be the same. There are ways around the restrictions on playing times for women and men so long as it can be justified. This is one of them or running ladies and gents comps concurrently.

Yer lady captain might be a bloke and your gent's captain might be a lady from now on.

Anyone wanna set up their own club of less than 25 members? Maybe all golf courses will have 20 different clubs playing out of the same course again in order to circumvent the legislation.
 
I think that whilst the 'Equality Act' may dictate that Women can play on any day that Men can, ie a Saturday, the reality will be that they will still hold their Ladies' Day on a Wednesday, and keep the status-quo.

I'm sure that if Saturdays were suddenly interspersed with groups of Ladies taking 4 to get to the green, then their Wednesdays would suddenly be a lot busier with gents too.

Dare I suggest it, there are perhaps 5/6 women at my Club that might feel equipped to play at 8.30/9am on a Saturday, but I'm not sure they will.

As said, it will be interesting to see how this all develops.
 
I genuinely believe the legislation may backfire and we'll see more and more single sex associations or clubs sprout up in an effort to do things the way they were.

Do men and women really want to be treated equally in every respect? Let's face it the Equality Act 2010 has now made it more expensive for a lot of female golfers to play at their club. Vive la difference, as they say.
 
At our club the ladies have paid less for their 7 day membership but don't tee off until after 11am but the new laws will stop this, According to the EGU guide to the law, the problem is that if only one lady wants to tee off at 8am then they are being discriminated against and can sue the club. The 15 or so Sunday mornings when the men play their competitions and, with a two tee start, which closes the course, will also be a real headache to sort out - glad I'm off the committee!
