"Epic films"

An "epic" was often defined by the fact it required an intermission and or no 'B' movie to accompany it...

Surprised no one has nominated the original King Kong.... Bit dated now but a great movie none the less...

Is it the Japanese version, or the Tom Cruise one?

I'll keep my eye out for El Cid.
Two different films mate, Tom cruise hollywood liberty taking to the max. Soldier becomes Samurai in a week. Total rhubarb. Seven Samurai classic film with great performances that was the inspiration for The Magnificent Seven which also pales besides the original.

Top shout - the original King Kong.

There is also "raiders of the lost ark" and the other subsequent films, in the same genre.

Not one mention for Once upon a Time in America? Hang your heads in shame, oob forum. As far as epics go, it's right up there with the best.

Honourable mentions for City of God and Carandiru for less well kent but equally barry movies.

Was thinking that myself. Brilliant story and great performances from de Niro and the vastly underrated James Woods.
