England Sporting Anthem

Two sides of an often raised argument are that English people don't have, or feel unable to celebrate, an "Englishness" identity and that (to the other British nations) the English often seem unable to distinguish between England and Britain.

IMO if England ditched the British national anthem in favour of an English one it would be one step towards addressing this. Do none of the GSTQ fans agree?

Why has this turned into a rugby thing? The English are the only home country that hasn't got its own Nation Anthem. It whas been discussed for years and it is about time Land Of Hope And Glory was adopted as such. Sure GST(Q/K) can be played when they are in attendence, BUT AS WELL AS the National Anthems! They will always be Head Of The Commonwealth so can have their song sung when they turn up to watch the peasants at play.

This is a genuine question, I honestly don't know the answer...

What anthems are played for each of the home nations when one of their athletes wins at the Commonwealth Games?

as a jock living in Wales i think it's Fine that England sing GSTQ. we have our own anthems why get upset about England singing about thier queen? it's pure mince and not uplifting anyway lol!
fwiw the Welsh anthem in the millenium lifts the hairs on the back of your neck, never had that with FOS at murrayfield or hampden

I always found it mildly amusing when England supporters waved the Union Flag when playing other home Nations. Also that silly wee man who strutted around in his Union flag outfit. Thankfully they now have discovered the England flag. Next move is a tune.

Not as amusing as the flag of the Republic of Ireland being flown in such numbers at Parkhead

I think they still used Scotland the Brave at the last Commonwealth Games
Unsure about the Wales and NI

NI was Londonderry Aire [Danny Boy]
Wales was the Welsh version of Land of my Fathers
Scotland changed to FoS in 2010

With Jerusalem for England it sounds good all round to me.

Don't care if England use GSTQ, but Jerusalem is a much better song imo. Terrific imo.

Flower Of Scotland is brutal.

Land of my Fathers is terrific, too.

First part........... i would never class it as arrogance to support your club or country ... its how you do it & there are idiots supporting all countries ..

Second part .. very nieve if you think this is the case ..

############### BUT THIS IS PURELY A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE ##############

I heard the atmosphere at Croke Park was pretty 'welcoming'

Not for me. I always thought of myself as a Brit and very proud to be so. Only in recent times have I thought of myself as English and that's as a reaction to anti-English sentiments from other Brits!

Dont get the relevence of a song some one wrote ?

We had a soccer song that said

"and we'll realy shake them up when we win the world cup, coz ireland are the greatest football team "

honestly we didnt "realy" believe that.. not before the 6 pints of guinness anyhow :D :D

I dont think the beetles all lived in a yellow submarine either, or did they ? ? just a song mate ,

You offer any of the nations 1 win over England , or lose to England but win the championship .. ill tell you what proper sports fans will say .. the idiots (we all have them) might slobber differently

Probably around Martin Johnsons time so after the tit he made of himself & the so called respect of rubgy traditions etc etc what would you expect , honestly

fair enough.

maybe Jonno was wrong to make the Irish PM get her shoes dirty ;) felt like a statement at the time though.

back on topic.... all of our songs are really pompous, GSTQ/Jerulsalem/Land Of Hope & Glory/I vow to thee my country. all rubbish.

I reckon we should use this

Sometimes being heavily pro something can be misinterpreted as being anti the other. It's a fine line.I love England as a country and a people, my dad and sister are both English.
I'll be honest and admit my opinion only changes when it comes to football and rugby when an irrational dislike surfaces, and things like the Bullingdon club when I'd happily see great misfortune visit those people, but that's an opinion shared by most in England too?

Scotland/England/Wales should have a terrific healthy relationship with parity, GSTQ does kinda fly in the face of that, Jerusalem does not.

Statement of what tho , im a bully idiot look at me ? anyhow thats a different debate not for here ..

Play no Anthems at the start of the matches at all , or get a single Rubgy world anthem & play it once before all internationals , the same song world wide ..
Internationals in our place are nuts , Visiting Anthem Irish One then irelands call , id say players have a pain in their you know whats waiting to play, they spend ages warming up then 10/ 15 mins standing around with anthems and handshakes etc .. then the camera scans the Irish guys as they are pretendin to sing our Anthem even tho they dont know all the words ha ha ( this was funnier at the soccer tho) rubbish
