England Sporting Anthem

I am a proud Englishman BUT I am also a republican so to me there is a problem in a national anthem that does not celebrate the nation; only the glorification of and subjugation to a monarch.

A very sad state of affairs.

I prefer the Sex pistols version -

"God save the Queen, and her fascist regime....."

This almost falls into the category of, are you English first or British first or even European first and the same goes for Scottish, Irish & Welsh, which is a hell of a question and one that will get massive swings in variations.

I'm personally English first, happy to be British when there is combined GB (England, Ireland, Welsh & Scottish) contribution and very last European, if at all.

I would like there to be an English anthem along the lines of Hope & Glory for solitary English games and GSTQ for GB games. Whilst the Scottish, Irish & Welsh can declare their identity, I don't see why I can't acknowledge mine in the same vein. Unfortunately it seems in many areas of identity legal forms you can declare yourself Scottish, Irish & Welsh but I can only declare myself as British, that's just wrong IMO.

I've fought for my Queen and will stand for the anthem when ever heard.

I'm English and my National Anthem is God Save The Queen...end of. So that's what I expect to be sung if it's an England game and the National Anthem is called for (be it tradition or protocol). If it's a hymn that's called for then fine Jerusalem or if it's a patriotic song then Land of Hope & Glory...but it's not, it's the National Anthem and that is God Save The Queen. If the Welsh and Scots choose to sing something different then so be it but I see no reason why we should follow suit.

I totally agree. I am not sure if England are playing of the other members of union why there is a need for anything other than one rendition of the national anthem to cover both teams

Unusually for a scouser, I don't mind royalty. I know there are certain implications of what is correct for England, compared to GB.

However, I don't think that GSTH is the most inspiring of anthems. I was at some of the England games for Euro 96, and dont get me wrong, when sang at it's best it can be quite inspiring, just not against Moldove on a cold wednesday evening (in Stoke?). :)

I think that land of hope and glory(GB or English song) or Jerusalem would be better.

All this idle chat won't matter when Wales win by 10 points on Saturday :D

Explain this to me. If an English man had posted that it would be typical English arrogance, if you are Welsh, what is it apart from hypocrisy ??

it won't be 10 points, but Wales may well win. Seeing as that is how Wales Rugby defines itself it will be a good season:thup:

As for GSTQ it's a proper dirge, but it's our dirge, it's not going to be changed. Everyones Anthem is better than ours :(

Not a GB anthem but the Marseillaise is my favourite

I don't think Wales will win, I think they will give too many penalties away and will be punished accordingly with 3 points every time. If Wales play to their full ability on the day it will be a close affair but I think England will still edge it. Taking nothing away from the Italians, I think their (England's) display last week possibly did more good than harm struggling in the manner they did almost in all area's of the park at times.

If England are to win they must be hungry for the ball more and get to the breakdowns better and want the loose ball more otherwise if Wales get the momentum they could be hard to stop.

England by 6, a nail biting last few minutes ;)

Not a great fan of GSTQ. Doesn't stir me. Prefer Jerusalem - wonderfully radical words by William Blake - or I Vow To Thee My County (but that always makes me so sad as it was written at the end of WWI to offer solace for the appalling slaughter). Both great tunes. I generally quite like Elgar but have never been a fan of Land of Hope and Glory. Just seems a bit too OTT.

My favourites from other countries are South Africa, Wales and France. Italy's is wonderfully operatic.

Just had a crazy image in my head of the hush following some other team's rousing, historic, revered, national anthem. Now for England. A famous opera singer steps forward, orchestral intro swells and we go into

"Here we go, Here we go, Here we go,
Here we go, Here we go, Here we go-o,
Here we go, Here we go, Here we go,
Here we go-o, Heere weee go."

You know the one :D

Did you hear the two English TV pundits saying that if England do not run in 5 tries against Italy they would be disappointed.....and they are the alleged experts.
I have a Welsh mother [who has lived 65 years in Scotland] so I shall be cheering on my 'second' country.

and no doubt you were cheering your old ally in the France game - It would be much easier to just say you are firmly in the 'anyone but England' camp

support who you like. I just don't get the double standards. If you're Welsh/Scottish/Irish and you state 'we are going to ...', It's supporting your country, if you are English it's arrogance

All Wales/Scotland/Ireland want to do is beat England, they don't mind losing to (insert sporting minnow) as long as they can beat England. It's nonsense and I reckon, certainly in Rugby with Wales & Ireland it holds those teams back.

My comment about Wales was just a bit of light-hearted banter. I have confidence in my team so I'm obviously backing them to win, but I'm not saying its a given as I know how strong the English team are.

I just hope we stuff you and put you back in your little red. leek lined box :D

So wrong.......my wife is English and I cheer for England whenever I feel neutral.

I obviously wanted England to win to help Scotland's position but Italy played very well in the second half and showed a much more positive attitude than England. So towards the end of the match I was hoping for a draw.
France have been dreadful.

France have been dreadful.

Now that we can agree on! no idea what is going on with them? is it a fundamental problem in their league set up where they have no salary caps so the "best" players in the league are English, Saffers, Aussies, Kiwis etc? keeping the nationals out of position, Toulon for example, Michelak can not get the 10 shirt off Wilko, but then he is expected to play there for his country? This is the main reason why england will never win the football world cup (again) IMHO.

First part........... i would never class it as arrogance to support your club or country ... its how you do it & there are idiots supporting all countries ..

Second part .. very nieve if you think this is the case ..

Now the next part is purely from my own experience and MAY NOT be the norm , but ive been at alot of rugby matches at home and a few away , have worked directly & indirectly for IRFU in old landsdown road ..
The Irl v Wal & Irl V Sco were far nicer , far more fun & far better experiences than any of the Irl v Eng experiences

############### BUT THIS IS PURELY A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE ##############

Er... yeah, they're the Experts and England will have been annoyed they didn't run in 5 tries. So to say that England and the Experts will be disappointed not to run in 5 tries is a completly factual statement so I don't understand your comment.....

As for the Anthem - Amanda says it perfectly.
