England Cricket Tour to Sri Lanka

England's top 6 really is poor. The whole business with shoving Stokes up to 3 is a farce. Root needs to take responsibility and bat there himself. Mind you, he's not exactly scoring runs himself.

The point about Jennings is a good one. But then the question is who opens instead of him?
they even used a night watchman for an opener!!!!

Root should step up to 3 no doubt in that, he our best player or was. Jennings is sheer hite ,maybe give Denly a go, he can't do any worse;) can he :) but what do they do stick with jenning s for another series and effectively play with 10 men when it come s to the ashes

I didnt see the incident but i think it was something along the lines of the Sri Lankan batsman failed to ground his bat after hitting a 4 so they were penalised 5 runs. Not sure of the rules on the matter but i love a good cricket anomaly!
yes deliberately not making his ground apparently , first time ive ever heard of that?

Jennings is nailed on for the while now after his century in the first test! He looks okay against the spinners and is arguably a case for picking players for certain conditions. It happens with bowlers (England would never play 3 spinners at home as they are now) so why not with batsmen?

Dawid Malan would be another case of a batsman who is arguably better suited to away series' than home.

I thought that was worth digging in to

Roshen cut Leach towards the boundary and, thinking he had picked up four, did not ground his bat at the non-striker's end after jogging through for the first run.
However, Moeen prevented the boundary and Roshen set off back to the striker's end from a yard outside the crease.
Umpire Marais Erasmus declared a dead ball and gave England five penalty runs, ruling that Roshen had deliberately run short, perhaps believing he had done so to guarantee he maintained the strike.

Never seen that one before.

maybe, Jenning s other ton was in India, but why would you pick an opener just to play in the sub continent, England play a fair few teams against teams with quick bowlers, even India now have faster bowlers than Them and with a WIndies and Ashes summer coming up they need someone to face the new ball??

Today's play has seen some of the aspects of test cricket that make it great: England with a proper keeper, Jack Leach getting wickets and then opening the batting and 5 penalty runs against Sri Lanka.

Marvellous!

Roshen Silva batting in a cap needs to be added to the above list as well.

Apparently England batsmen are not permitted to dispense with the helmet even if there are 2 spinners bowling in tandem.

I'm following the game this morning via the BBC sport website. Cracking knock by Root and more excellent support by Foakes. Best keeper, scores runs, Butler and Bairstow can pack away the gloves for a while as far as test matches go.

Belter of a test match, far more interesting than a flat track borefest.

Yes good innings by Root but what a waste of his wicket, just a stupid shot.

Great innings from Root, needed a skipper's knock. Pleased Burns got some runs. Foakes is a roaring success.

Quality day - some clever batting , some very dodgy batting riding a bit of luck but overall they played very well and apart from a small period they formed good partnerships. Shame about the two stupid reviews - both clearly plumb.

Rather than get up the normal time and see England 5 down ,decided to get up and see it first hand. First time I've seen Burns live and he looked ok, then played back to a ball he prob should have been forward to and was bowled. But despite is set up looks a bitbetter than Jennings

Ordinarily I'd have been pleased for Bairstow yesterday but his comments about being castigated for being injured have made him look like a bit of a tool. He wasnt castigated for being injured but was castigated for how he got injured. Maybe someone should point that out to him. Also his form in tests over the preceding 18 months had been mediocre so he was rightly under scrutiny. He got injured (rather than dropped, another media malaproprism) and Foakes has taken his chance with the gloves. Deal with it Jonny.

Sadly one senses that some have a sense of entitlement to their place regardless of anything else.
