So who has signed the e-petition to stop looters/rioters benefits? Took me god-knows how many attempts to actually get on the site to sign it but managed in the end

Haven't signed it and won't sign it. For a start, the illiterate who wrote it calls for rioters to "loose" their benefits. I think I will start a petition demanding that anyone who starts a petition must have at least a GCSE in English.

More importantly, why does anyone think that depriving these rioters' families of income, food, heating etc is appropriate? If anyone is convicted of rioting/public order/looting/whatever, let the law take its course and whatever penalties are in place be applied. But adding petty vindictive punishments to their families too is simply wrong.

Never made a typo Ethan?

Feed them centrally at soup kitchens.

I doubt it was a typo. You would be surprised at the number of people who can't use 'lose' and 'loose' correctly. Or perhaps you wouldn't.

Soup kitchens have no place in a modern society. Anyway, they also simply transfer cost from one part of the state to another, just to serve a demand for revenge rather than justice.

Perhaps you would like to see the workhouses re-open too?

Ethan, I'm pretty sure that when you see your insurance premiums at your next renewal you won't be feeling so magnanimous

no problem mate, lets continue to be soft on them then. Once there are no prison places left and they are simply getting fined - which they will pay at a derisory rate from their benefits - which we pay from our taxes - then let us not be surprised when it all happens again.

Who said anything about being soft on them? I said that the law should deal with them, and if that involves prison, fine. Your 'solution' will do nothing useful except give you a warm feeling of vengeance, and you and your co-petitioners have nothing to say on the provision of prison places.

If you had a petition saying that Parliament should pass an emergency law allowing rioters to be arrested and detained for longer pending fast track disposal by the courts and that priority should be given to imprisonment of these people over other petty non-violent crime, you might make some more sense and do something useful.

But what do you think will happen if you deprive them of benefits? Will they reflect on their behaviour and decide to dedicate themselves to good community works, or will they be forced to try and steal some more stuff to sell to pay the bills? Mmm, hard to say.

This petition is just full of mis-directed anger and hasn't been thought through at all.

Is the right answer.

I got sent it by a mate on email. I tend to agree with Ethan here.

I won't sign even though I believe the punishment should be harsh for anyone convicted of rioting.

Stopping benefits will surely just serve to increase criminality.

This e-petition is a complete waste of time, cutting benefits would only result in more riots, and these ones would be worse, because the people WOULD be poor, hungry and in need.

Better punishment would be to make them clean up the communities they trashed. Give them buckets, brooms and paint, introduce them to a days work and maybe , just maybe they will realise waht a community is and should stand for.

After that, try and find them jobs, and if that means curbing immigration and sticking a few fingers up to the EU, cutting foreign aid to India, China, Pakistan and investing the money at home, the country will be better off for it.

It was interesting to see the mature schoolroom assistant hide his face with a paper, coming out of the courthouse SO why don't the courts offer a non-custodial sentence offering guilty parties the opportunity to clean up the areas trashed....WEARING A BRIGHT YELLOW JACKET WITH "I'M A DICKHEAD" EMBLAZONED THEREON!

Maybe they will then be surprised at the reaction from the local community.

Ive always thought they should scrap unemployment benefit and workforces should be set up to clean graffiti, pick up litter, community projects etc.
If you cant be bothered to attend and work on these, sorry but no money for you!

What a silly comment - there are thousands of us unemployed due to the recession.

I closed my business after numerous large clients went into liquidation - and only some of my staff got re employed elsewhere - so you think hese people with 8+ GCSE's, 3 A levels and degrees should get nothing as it would be financial suicide to go to work and pay to get their children minded elsewhere - dont think so .

I do agree tha the youth are problematic - but you create work gangs and they will simply rebel - so it's not the answer, however there must be a smart solution.

Although I feel that the families of the under age should also be punished I also feel it will back fire. I think the best case is to make all if those convicted underage and over 18's should be made to do community service and clean up the mess they have made. This of course will probably be too late for the directly affected but they can atleast help in other areas of rebuilding the community.
