I never noticed this before but I compared a DGS300 shaft on a Titleist iron with one on a Callaway iron and they are not installed the same way.

I think the step pattern/spacing is the same but there is some variance in the distance from say the hosel to the first step on the shaft when comparing say the 5 Irons.

Is that common and why is there a difference?

The one with the bigger gap between the hosel and the first step will be a stiffer tipped shaft if I'm not mistaken.

You can get the same stiffness shafts by the same company but ones with stiffer tips in.

I think I've got it right, could be completely wrong though haha.

Sounds right to my limited knowledge

It's the other way round.... Dynamic Gold shafts typically are 130grms plus or minus 5 grams..... The X flex start around 7.5 " from the tip for the 1st step... S's are around 9.5" and R's around 12.25"......

Each shaft has 12 steps which mainly correlate to the ball flight......

Actually I just noticed that the distance between the steps is marginally different if I compare the S300 in different irons.

Can this be down to manufacturing tolerance or do Dynamic Gold change their design from time to time?

This might clear up a few things.........

I looked at that but couldn't find anything to help.

I may pay another visit to AG tomorrow to check the shafts on the new irons that I have. The problem I have is that the S300 in my AP2 are different to the S300 in the Xhot Pros - How can this be?

The tip length is different and the spacing between the steps is not exactly the same.

If they are both new sets then im lost for an explanation..... If they are 2nd hand then maybe either of the two sets may have been soft or hard stepped at some stage....

Which Model are they..... DG..... DG SL's or DG XP's ?

Both are supposed to be DG S300 but they look different.

I cant really make sense of the charts on the TT website. But from what I can tell the spacing on one S300 is 1.75 and the other S300 the step spacing could be 1.88

Is this possible? This would explain when I place both 7I's next to each other so that the first step marks are aligned, the second step mark is slightly out , the 3rd is even more out, the 4th, and so on. By the 9th step the difference is about 1 inch!

Both irons have 9 steps (starting from the first).

To me it looks like one of these is not a S300 unless there are variations that I am not aware of.

Kid, I did some more research. I think the AP2 iron bore size is .355 whereas the XHP is .370

I think this means that the AP2 has a tapered tip shaft and the XHP possibly a parallel type?

This could well explain the different step pattern?

That's the right answer, taper tip and parallel tip have different spacings between the steps and also from hosel to first step could bne different.

The XHP S300 shaft definitely has the slightly wider spacing (1.88), the S300 in the AP2 has presumably 1.75 spacing, it looks about right.

However on both irons I can only count 9 steps that are visible. The problem I have is that the spacing diagrams on the TT website shows the shaft which has 1.75 gaps also has 11 steps. Am I right to assume that 2 steps disappear out of sight under the grip?

I thought that the section under the grip was usually smooth not stepped.

I had my nippon e11 x stiff soft stepped to get a higher ball flight. There was a chart like the one posted on what the measurements where but confused the heck out of me
