Dubai Premier inn is less than a full driver from the Emirates airport, has a bar/restaurant, cafe onsite with a couple of attended pools on the roof. Its very cheap compared to most, taxis aren't too expensive neither but the place has no soul, roads are spectacularly wide in most parts and makes the place like never ending carriageways.
If you go, you must get to the Atlantis on the palm complex for dinner one night just for the experience. We stayed over a couple of days (wife and kids) on the way back from Singapore and would much rather stay there (singapore) and go to the Singapore open on sentosa island, most of the big names are there and the place oozes interesting places and history.

Dubai? It was reasonable but could be ludicrously expensive if you stay in any of the burj type places.
Completely different experience to Europe though. We were there during Ramadan and the hotel was good enough to leave an A4 laminate sheet of paper on the bed listing what we could and couldn't do. No shows of affection to our kids, eating, levels of dress in public etc. though to be honest it wasnt much of a problem. R2D wouldn't be near Ramadan anyway.
Certainly the driest hottest place I have ever been and to be honest, wouldn't be in a rush back.

What time of year did you go?

R2D is 20-23 Nov next year.

Funnily enough had a crack about Dubai with the old man today and this was exactly his sentiments...They done the Dubai World Cup, Emirates Golf Club (majlis), Burj and all the other big shot stuff you here about and he wouldn't rush back. No doubt I'll do it sometime especially with regular flights from Newcastle but not top of the "To do" list.
