I always attend the Irish Open every year but after watching the golf this morning I have decided I will give the Irish Open a miss in 2014 and go to Dubai instead.

Has anyone been to the final tournament in the Race to Dubai before and would they recommend it?

Cheers!

I wouldn't recommend Dubai to anyone - awful place - a country desperate to show how rich the are whilst hiding all the working in the slums.

Qatar isn't as bad nor Abu Dhabi.

For the money you will spend I would go and watch the Ryder Cup or the Players

I considered the RC but the ticket prices are crazy Phil. Living in Northern Ireland so I would have to factor in flights/ferry prices too.

It looks like I may be going to it too as my mate is moving there early 2014 and his Father is 70 next year and we are looking at combining his 70th with the R2D week.

For the record my pal says Dubai is a great place.

My golf travel are doing a package for £2000 -

Compare that to how much you will pay to go to Dubai for 4 days and including hotels and travel.

£800 max flying from Dublin and staying in a decent hotel over there and that's for 7 nights. I've done all the calculations before booking. ;)

Sounds like a great plan. I see it is a week later next year Dodger.

Which hotel mate ?

I would still pay the extra for the RC - we might not have it on these shores for a while !

The RC is miles outside of my budget unfortunately Phil and the week in Dubai would be like a holiday too at the same time.

There are various hotels in that price range with most of them getting great reviews.

Just stay away from Bur Dubai and hotels in that area mate.

You will see a lot more golf in Dubai, they have good crowds but nowhere near the amount you get at a Ryder Cup, I went to Celtic Manor for the Friday and it was a struggle at times to actually see much golf due to the amount of people.

Plus the weather should be a lot better over in Dubai! :)

I was at Gleneagles a few weeks ago and the general opinion there is that it could be a nightmare for spectators.

Apparently the season passes for Dubai are free of charge.

I'm sure I will sample that.

Is it really as strict there as some people make it out to be?

It's strict when it suits them

They do try and target "Westerners" at times yet ignore or the Middle East businessmen visiting "working ladies" in hotels fully known to the police etc.

You will be safe within the grounds of the tourist area as long as your just behaving normally ( if you know what I mean )

Dubai Premier inn is less than a full driver from the Emirates airport, has a bar/restaurant, cafe onsite with a couple of attended pools on the roof. Its very cheap compared to most, taxis aren't too expensive neither but the place has no soul, roads are spectacularly wide in most parts and makes the place like never ending carriageways.
If you go, you must get to the Atlantis on the palm complex for dinner one night just for the experience. We stayed over a couple of days (wife and kids) on the way back from Singapore and would much rather stay there (singapore) and go to the Singapore open on sentosa island, most of the big names are there and the place oozes interesting places and history.

I'd pick Dubai over the RC every day. 30,000 people trying to watch 4 matches.......sod that, you won't see a thing.

Take your sticks with you and play a couple of games while you are out there, the Montgomerie is a good course with the novel feature of a par 3 that has tees 360 degrees all the way round the green so you can play it differently every time.
