As I mentioned on an earlier thread I have been having a few problems driving straight and this along with my putting has been killing my rounds. On Sunday I was playing with my brother in law as usual. Our tee time was delayed by 45 minutes due to frost causing a late opening of the course. As my brother in law had to take my nephew to a rugby match later that day, we knew we would be waliking off early, so I decided to go all out to get my best score for the first 9. Biggest decision I made was to decide to forget the woods and play irons off the tee. For the first 5 holes the results were amazing. I hit all the fairways and was on green in 2 on the shorter par 4s. On the longer par 4s I knew I couldn't reach with my second so I would lay up, putting a lot less pressure on me. Apart from my putting everything was going great. Was sure I was going to better my first 9 score.
Then comes the 6th. 150yd par 3 over water. 4 balls into the water, card ruined. I had never put it in the water here before.
Anyway now that my plan was ruined I took the driver out at the next and hit it perfectly straight. This continued at the next 4 holes that I played driver off the tee. Problem is I have no idea what I was doing right and know the next time I go out it will probably be back to the slice.

Let me guess, Lisburn?
That 6th is a pain if you ar eshort, long is a good call every time fella. It is also a ver tight track round there.
Get to the driving range and if you dont get a few lessons, get plenty of time to experiment and note what works and what doesnt.

No not Lisburn, Greenacres just outside Ballyrobert. Problem was that all of a sudden I started hitting the ground before the ball, looseing a lot of distance and splash.

is obvious. you was just swinging the driver with no care or worry. Now try the same again down the range or on the same course and on the first shot you take try to make notes of your set up, hit the ball, if its straight try it again. It never works.

A care free relaxed swing is always successfull....

Went to the range last night and I'm still driving straight. I think I may have been standing too close to the ball beforehand. Stood a bit further back on my long irons too and they were better also. Here's hoping it sticks till Sunday.

Hello Lawrence, I am a qualified golf instructor and I was interested by your comments on driving and putting. The reason I believe you started driving straighter is because you were using your irons first, this set a nice tempo in your swing without trying to 'kill' the ball. We all get a little too cocky once we start to hit the driver straight and start thinking 'If only I hit the ball a little harder it will go further'. The problem is that we lose control of the club head, if you go to the range and start trying to 'feel' where the club head is and whether the face is open, square or shut you will begin learn dramatically about club head control. You also need to find a tempo that suits your swing, begin with a slowish swing and build up the tempo until you start losing club head control, you will instantly know when this happens and then you will be able to tag a phase or number to this tempo. I like to use the phrase 'one hundred and one', one hundred is the backswing to the top, 'and' is the transition and 'one' is the hit. Give it a go and let me know how you get on.

Thanks for that. Hope to hit the range again this evening.
