Driver tee height.

I seem to be switching between quite high and fairly low with my driver. If I tee it high, it often comes out the top 1/3rd of the face, but if I tee it lower, it comes out the middle, but I sometimes get the old "pitching wood" effect, you know (I hope!) where because it's a tad low, you end up striking down rather than up. :D

Here is a picture of my choice of tee at the range tonight.

Now, ignore the lie of the head (I had to prop it up against the bay wall) but does this look sensible?? I have my own rubber tees, but this is the range tee in blue, a tad lower than the range tees in white.

Does anyone have any good experience of discovering anything particularly good but going lower of higher?
I know most magazine and book advice is to have half the ball clear of the crown, would that match my picture or am I a tad low?

Regardless, the benny HT was on top form.....still landing in the bush at 205, which is a fair carry for a high launch model at c.95 mph with range balls.

What d'you reckon..... :)

I'd say a fraction high but not much in it. I think you'll better off just playing around with the height off a grass tee and seeing where the optimum height is. I find half a ball over the top (as recommended) too high for me.

Looks high to me but I play it low myself.

The pro's seem to say it's easier to draw when high and fade when low if thats any help.

Okay...so three for a tad lower. I agree, totally, but I just get the odd duff one that "pops up" if I go low.

I know they're the work of the devil, but I use silver and pink castle. Silver is doing my head in with the benny, and yet it was peachy with my 10* Callaway FT-3. Just goes to show, different clubs react in different ways to how high up the face you hit 'em.

Thanks Lads, just what I was after.

I had mine teed up about that high at the range tonight and the bloody things were flying like I'd hit a 9 wood!
I don't do that on the golf course so why were they going so high when the mat underneath is harder than any ground I'd play on????

I agree with most that it looks a little high.
Everyone swings differently but if you force yourself or unknowingly start hitting a ball that sits too high it can have a knock on effect on other shots, topping springs to mind.
having said that, if it works for you then its ok.

I swapped my wooden tees for the grey tall castle type. It gave me the same tee height everytime, and then i just worked on the position of the ball. Since changing tees i have been driving more consistently as it has taken one variable out of the setup.

When I tee up with my driver, I extend my middle finger, while holding the ball on the tee, so it is pointing down while I push the tee in the ground. when my finger touches the ground, it gives me consistent height.

Another variable can be that some people don't sit the middle of the driver directly behing the ball they have the ball more towrds the toe because when you swing and hit the ball the middle of the driver will then be directly behind the ball.
You can try for yourself, if you sit the club on the ground with the ball in the middle and then just lift it off the ground as it would be at impact you can see it is towards the heel. The higher you have the tee the more the displacement.
So maybe when you hit it low it's coming more from the heel.

That would be a little high for me. I use a standard 55mm wooden tee pushed in about 15mm, but everyone I play with says I'm teeing it to low. It suits me, as my bad shots are always heavy and if tee'd up to high I'd just go straight underneath the ball. Windy conditions I even tee it a little lower, just to try and keep the ball flight lower.

absolutely, as I said elsewhere, I used a marker pen to put X's on the range balls then checked where the impact was. I tee up with the ball about an inch toward the toe off blue&whites. seems to work, so far!

I tee it at least that high, but I hovver the club, so it doesn't really make any difference how high I tee it, I just get a flatter swing plane.

Next time you go to watch a tournament have a close look at the height that the pros tee up at.

All the books say half the ball above the top of the driver. At the B Masters last year most of them were teeing level with the top of the ball.

Does'nt extending the middle finger annoy your partners :D :D

I only ever have 1/4 of the ball above the head of the driver. If I tee it too high then it spins less and I find any Draw spin becomes a hook or fade becomes slice.

Hitting out of the bottom of my FT-% seems to spin it more so less side spin is imparted and less wayward.

My range has 3 tee types. Really tall for driver, really short for irons, And one in the middle that seems a little high for woods but too low for most peoples drivers.

The middle one is the one I use as I said I like it low!

Whoa.....24 hrs later and everyone is adding their pennies worth.

I like the extended middle finger idea.....I use this tactic off the lights when I'm up against the Zetec S boys....sorry, on track, golf....yes, a good plan. Nice one.

I also agree with the comment about teeing it a tad off the toe....that works for me.....

Why don't the Zetec boys ever learn? They have all sorts of stickers and boy racer gizmos on their Fiestas....you would have thought that my very subtle "Pumabuild" stickers would tell them all they need to know.....
