Driver essential?

Played a guy off 5 on Saturday and he was using a 7.5 degree driver with prolaunch red shaft. His drives were going on what i'd call a normal trajectory and a lot further than mine were too :(

Obviously a 9* stiff shafted driver isn't any good for you. I'd imagine you'll be struggling to get the face square at impact with that loft and barely getting any height with that shaft.
But I think a driver is a very important club, which most high handicappers would benefit from (the correct one that is).
During the wettest (winter) conditions at our club you have to tee up on the fairway and I find that it is the higher handicappers who benefit most from this as they can keep hitting drivers.

With that big head there is less chance of skying a drive or topping it badly. The sweet spot is larger thus helping off centre strikes and for alot of people the bigger head instils confidence.

When my boss had to get rid of his Callaway ERC (rule changes) he got fitted for a 13* Ping G10. He hits it further than his old driver and a damn sight straighter.

So I think that yes, a driver is very useful.

I agree with most on this about changing out the Driver for one more forgiving. But i'd also say stick with using one, even if it's only for practice rounds and on the range otherwise as you progress you could be in danger of developing a mental block towards the driver.
In pre-hybrid days i used to hit a 1 iron from the tee as i just couldn't use a driver, finally having lessons with a pro he mentioned that if i want to improve i need to become confident with the driver again, i started it back in the bag on the range and finally got more confidence in it until i put it back in the bag full time.....now i have no problems with it.....simples! :D
