Driver dilemma

so i have serious issues with my driver !
last year using my TM r580d stiff flex, i was shooting approx 85 week in week out pretty straight and hitting the driver about 220-230yrds.........now heres the issue over the winter i bought a TM R9 regular shaft as the pro said i shouldnt be using a stiff flex due swing speed ,im now spraying the driver all over the show and shooting around 95 , what the hell do i do

oh i shud add i bought the driver wanting more yardage and to make my assault on breaking 80! ive since gone backwards! fuming

The obvious thing to do is go back to your other driver

I always think with shafts you should always go as stiff as you can handle as a tighter dispertion imo is always better than a bit of extra distance

Trade it in for a stiff shafted Titleist 910 D3 you will not regret it

Or....

you could try just swing 10% less with your current driver.

The regular flex shaft is designed to give you that extra oomph, so you don't need to swing out of your socks with it. A smoother, slower swing will get you the extra yardage without the wider dispersion.

Worth a try before you lay out a couple of hundred bucks.

so what youre saying is ,its probably that im still trying to club it out there! and when i do hit a good 1 its because ive just swung the club naturally......and i havnt worked that out or the right tempo

I tried a few hybrids a while back, and I was getting decent results with a stiffish shaft when I was lashing at it.

So then the guy gives me a regular shaft and says swing easy.

My swing speed fell drastically, but the yardage wasn't much different.

He reckons that was far more sustainable

So you were playing great and hitting fairways and the pro then advised you to screw it up. Nice. Maybe he was looking for a sale.

FWIW the standard shaft in the R9 is pretty soft, and the stiff shaft in the 580 is not a poker, so I would ignore the pro and go back to what works. As mentioned here many times, 'regular' and 'stiff' mean nothing as they vary so much between brands, and swing speed is not the only determinant of which is correct for any given player.

Go back to what works and don't change until it has stopped working.

Get your old model off e-bay or go for a proper fitting.
