Driver Confusion!

I've been thinking about buying a new driver recently, my friend has a R11 which he hits miles (measured one at
377 yards, wind behind last year!) quite intimidating when your playing with him! Anyway back to the point, I've
convinced myself it's the equipment thats to blame and not my technique. However just recently I've really begun to sort out my technique, hitting the driver 'from the inside' and consequently hitting it a lot straighter and further.Caught one right out of the middle last week which went 270 yards furthest I've ever hit a drive on the flat. My
question to all you experienced golfers is it worth buying a new driver? The truth is I am a whore for shiny new
equipment but is it worth it?
Ps. yardages mentioned all measured with the dreaded gps!

Its worth it if you get fitted for the shaft. I bought a head I liked the look of then got the shaft custom fitted.

For distance the head does make a difference, not massive but a bit. For accuracy the shaft makes a big difference.

My club, 140 for the driver, 90 for the shaft. Total 239 and my longest drive was 374 and in 9 holes I hit 3 drives over 300 yards!

270 is decent as it is tbh

I have a Ping G10 with a regular shaft. Your right 270 is decent but that was everything coming together, rare for
that to happen. Haven't been playing long but feel I should be custom fitted for correct shaft etc.

I use the same and had my best today of 279 but know I can get more out of it (I know we all say that).

Go for it with the custom fitting, nothing to lose except a few £££'s

All wind assisted of course! The shaft was the reason I hit so many fairways. After my experience I would recommend it to anyone. Pretty much any decent club head will do (unless you want adjustability), G10, G15, whatever. Just make sure you put the right shaft for your swing in it and you will hit a lot of fairways!

270 is a good distance.
250 in the middle of the fairway will be good enough on most holes you'll play unless you're a plus-handicapper without shots!
If what you have can consistently - not every time but more often than not - get you in the fairway 230+ yards away then keep it.

I can't - that's why I may be going shopping tomorrow..........

I have not played in ages and I drove pin high on 2 par 4 greens today but was on the fairway or fringe by the green. Birdied one and bogeyed the other!

I admit a 4 putt is not a good thing but it was on a bit of a mickey mouse green (16th on the Parkland course at East Horton).

Um.....No.

You could give me the best driver in the world, and I'd still only hit it 250 on a good one.

All the 3 members of my four-ball today hit it further than me, sometimes with clubs like 5 woods and hybrids.

I didn't play well, but my gross score still beat them all, comfortably. Go figure.....

I'm convinced, I'll stick with the driver and possibly have the pro look at my swing and see if I have the right
shaft, thanks for all your help.

I'm a rarity on here. I only average 235-250 max with my driver but would rather hit my next off the short stuff than bee 300 yards down a hole and chipping out. If you are straight then fine, look for the driver AND shaft combo to take your game to the next level. If you miss to many fairways I'd say stick with what you have a tad longer and get a driving lesson.

We have an ex-pro at our club and he really can hit it obsence distances. The first time I played with him I ended up trying to hit it harder and harder sub-consciously and it messed me up. Now I don't watch him swing. Perhaps wrong from an etiquette standpoint but I don't get intimidated that way and can then focus on sticking to my game

Thats a good point, My mate used to intimidate me (not intentionally I hasten to add) he hits it so far I ended up
thrashing at my drives, and as we all know thrashing = disaster. I learned to ignore his golf and try to get on
with my own game. I'm like you Homer, average about 230, 250 if it's a good one, every now and again if I
really catch it a few yards longer, but its not about length its how straight you can hit it, thankfully the last
month or so its a lot straighter!
