Driver awareness course.

just done another and got to say this one was a lot better than the first one. The first one was just full of South Yorkshire folk arguing.
This one ( run by the AA ) was very very good. The folk that went in there that were laughing and joking first off kinda realised the consequences of speeding as the course went on.
Anyone done one and learnt owt.

Did one last year with the AA, was a fair mix of people, from a pensioner in his 80's to a young lass who saw it as a chore being there. It was very interesting, specially the Tiff Needell bit. The two guys running the course passed on some funny but scary stories.

There was a photo similar to the below, with the white arrow, but on the course the photo should the brow of a hill and the road bearing right, the instructor told us in another class he asked which way did the road bend, 11 out of 12 said the correct answer which was to the right, one lady said to the left. When ask why she thought that she said that's the way the arrow is pointing.

Did one last year after getting caught speeding on an unfamiliar road in Scarborough. It was a rural road with no houses or shops, and no speed signs. I had assumed it was a 60, and was doing just over 40. Turned out that because it had streetlights, that made it a 30. Was well pissed off.

The course itself was pretty decent. The thing I remember was they asked everyone to rate themselves as a driver on a scale on 1-10. The average score was 8. they then asked us to rate the general public, the average score was 5.

The guy leading the course then says "Is it not a bit ironic that you lot think you are all much better drivers than the general public, yet every one of you is here today because you broke the law?'

Never done one and dont intend to, I'll take my points and fine, put me in a room full of idiotic boy racers and I might end up like Bronson and never come back out again!!

Ah say Mr high horse the noo. I don't make up the rules, as a law abiding citizen I stick by them. Kinda. If you have been on the course ( s), you will realise how stoopid they speed limits can be whether there is street lights or not.

Oh ah, found out today that there are differant speed limits in Scotland than England.

Did one on my 70th birthday & have to say it was much more interesting & informative than I thought it would be. Sat next to one of our members who had been caught on his way to the golf club. Another mate was on one a couple of weeks later, caught at the same spot, & he told me he knew someone who was caught speeding on his way to a speed awareness course.

A question they asked was "when might you drive at less than the speed limit" & people were saying fog, ice, wet road etc. I thought, just too late to say it thankfully, "when I've been drinking" Not true nowadays but I remember long ago, pre breathalyser, that we all use to drive with more care if we thought we'd had a bit too much to drink.

One interesting fact was that accident rates among young drivers is actually going down. This is put down to the fact that the current driving test is much more stringent & that a lot of young drivers have black boxes fitted to their cars to reduce their insurance.

The rule where I live is that you can't do a second course within 5 years of the first one.

The girl from the AA who did our course told us that if they got penalty points for anything they were automatically sacked.

Honest fish, when I went on me first course I thought I would be in a room full of Johnny back to front baseball cap boys. But the first like the second was full of all society's of life. In fact the second course was predominantly Fred flat cap back to front grandads.

The course itself was informative and if it's sole purpose was to educate then it pretty much done it's job. I suspect speeders will have forgotten it a few days/weeks later. I myself will never do another as I was mislead. I was told both by the trainers and others that it would not show up on your driving record and that insurers would not know of it. ALL insurers ask and all premiums rise as a result. The effect on premiums is no different to that from 3 penalty points. The fine from that/cost of course is similar and therefore, aside from education there is no benefit to the motorist. It's a con

Their like police cautions it's a deal between you and them your insurance company have no right to ask and no way of knowing you been on one

Technically your suppose to call your insurance company if you had a little ding and agreed to not claim and just repair it so they can increase your risk and premium

Trouble is though Jus that if you went on the course just to reduce your premuim on your insurance. Chances are that nowt will sink in.

my grief is that there are a lot of causes of deaths on the rd, drinking, drugs, phones, reckless etc etc. But there are no courses for this. The bit where just being a few miles over can kill did sink in a bit wi tash.

Well I guess it shows they have no affect when someone continues to break the speed limit

You should get one - if you don't learn from that then 6 points , if you don't learn from that then a months ban

A friend of mine who often drives faster than the speed limit was not offered a second course.
He was heavily fined and pointed to the edge of a ban and his insurance went through the roof.......he learned the hard way.

Lucky to be given a second one, around here, it's off to the Sheriff Court, do not pass Go, do not collect £200, if you get caught a second time. With a new 20mph limit in most of Edinburgh, the Sheriff Court is going to be a busy place

It shouldn't be; if the job's been done properly then the speeds should be engineered down to the limit and they shouldn't require police enforcement. Don't know if it is still the case but the Met didn't enforce them for precisely that reason.

There's a world of difference between deliberately exceeding the limit and, as in my case, freewheeling downhill & inadvertently letting the speed increase to 34mph.

Can you honestly say that you have never done something like that. If you can, we'll done, Mary Poppins.
