Came up in chat at lunchtime , If you accidently double hit say your 2nd shot , do you count it just as the 2 hits & play your 4th or is it 2 hits & 1 shot penalty aswell & play 5th..

As per the question i asked do you just count the 2 hits & play your 4th or has ther to be a penalty applied aswell, during lunch this came up & i said i wasnt aware you had to apply a penalty aswell , just count it as 2 hits & play your 4th but i ws contradicted ,

interesting this one,

taken from randa

Rule 14.4

If a player’s club strikes the ball more than once in the course of a stroke, the player must count the stroke and add a penalty stroke, making two strokes in all.

if im taking from this what i think,

1 stroke for the initial intended strike
1 stroke for the additional UN-intended strike
1 stroke penalty

effectively that one shot counts as 3 total strokes.

R&A could re-write that rule to be so much easier to understand.

blade,

ive checked the FAQ's, it seems the original stroke + 1 penalty stroke to be added no matter how many time he strikes the ball.

prrof the R&A could re-write the rulings clearer.

yeah that is interesting so it is still only 2 & youd be playing your 4th , been honest i would have counted the two hits as 2 shots but wouldnt have known it was classed as a penalty. the chap at lunch was told at weekend he would have to count both hits AND take penalty aswell , was only a society but i didnt think that sounded correct ,, cheers for that

to be fair that was my thoughts on reading the rule, but the FAQ's seemed to back what you said.

Yeah, its two strokes in total.

1 stroke (in which you have struck the ball twice)
+1 stroke penalty for striking the ball twice.

the first stroke includes everything that happens in that stroke.

remember a STROKE and STRIKE are to totally seperate things.

the complete opposite to the double strike is the "fresh air" which is a stroke that doesnt involve striking the ball at all.

I would agree with Philm. You have only made one "stroke" although you "hit" the ball twice.
The definition of a Stroke being:- "A "stroke" is the forward movement of the club made with the intention of striking at and moving the ball, but if a player checks his downswing before the clubhead reaches the ball he has not made a stroke." As you only made one forward movement with the intention of striking and moving the ball, you have only played one stroke.
I would also think the penalty is defined as in rule 19 "Ball in Motion Deflected or Stopped" section 19-2 "By Player, Partner, Caddy or Equipment"
