Good morning, I wonder if anybody can help with a bit of advice about the topic title (Duke of Edinburgh Award).

My nephew is soon to be 14 and start his DofE Bronze, he needs to do thw following to qualify;

1/ work for a charity for 6 months
2/ learn a skill
3/ take up an activity.

Tasks 2 and 3 are covered so can anyone give me any help regarding the first? Due to his age he cannot work in a shop at most charities, what could you suggest?

Thanks in advance

since when did a golf shop become a registered charity?
Why not see if doing something for charity i.e a fun run or something similar would count. Make it 6 months in the future and take 6 months to get the sponsorship...

I think you will find now most schools are registered charitys in some way. So there maybe a school run activity he could do.

My 2 eldest daughters were both in the guides and started helping out at Brownies/ rainbows.

Is your boy doing this through school or scouts, if scouts he could help out at beavers/ cubs

Or maybe there is an old peoples home nearby, he could do a couple of hours there over a weekend, making tea/ reading to or just talking to the residents.

Its all good character building stuff, I cant praise it highly enough

When we did it it doesn't have to be a registered charity.
Just charity work. We asked the people on the d of e presentation and they said that it didn't have to be a charity, just helping out somewhere

thanks so far for your input.

as the lad is only 14, every charity we have called are not interested due to insurance

he is a young firefighter and it's with the YFF he is doing to course, but bizarely he cannot have fire safety as a skill because he is a firefighter.

just to mention he is dsylexic and suffers from ADHD so need some easy ideas that he could cope with.

My 14 year old is also doing this. He is helping out with scouts cleaning the hut and helping with gear etc as well as helping a recently widowed neighbour with gardening and walking her dog.

Hope that helps.

Not knowing his other interests, hobbies etc.. it is difficult, but a few ideas might be;

* Local kennel rescue centre, ie/ dog walking, feeding etc..

* As mentioned before, beavers, cubs etc..

* Car washing (proceeds to charity)

Good luck to him - I done my Bronze, Silver and Gold and loved it. It really helped my social skills when I was young - I was lucky enough to get oine of the local charity shops to let me do a bit of Ironing (no wonder I hate Ironing now) and store room work. Then for my gold I was helping in the shop and also doing a bit in a Nursing home (mum worked there).

It's a great experience and really tough mentally and physically - Bronze was in the Mournes, Silver in the Lake District and Gold around Innsbruck (Austria).
