Do you use matching driver and 3-wood?

Just wondering if people use the same make and series in their drivers and 3-woods, or if people have a right old mixture.

It's likely I'll update both in the next few months, and am curious if certain clubs are SO good in the driver or 3-wood versions that it's worth mixing up to get the best overall result.

I can see that using the 1 and 3 in the same range would be beneficial in terms of liking the look, feel and shaft options.

Or have people trialled out 1 and 3 in the same model and found they loved the driver but not the 3-wood, and ended up mixing them?

The club geek in me would probably like them to match unless convinced otherwise... :o

Nicely to the point. Thanks.

Think my point is why you have different driver and 3 wood... is it best not to assume that if the driver is the club for you, so is the 3 in that range. Looking for some advice on how to trial clubs. As pairs, or take them as totally different searches.... try all the drivers, then start again and try all the 3s?

I realise I am making a really crap job of asking this question. It makes sense in my head, honest. :o

Mainly because I change my driver every 3 months (not intended, but it seems to work out this way), and my woods and hybrids last a bit longer.

I guess its not a must do as the two clubs can be doing such a different job. I use my driver 100% of the time off a tee and my 3 wood about 85% of the time off the deck.

That said I would love the driver that matches my 3 wood as the 910 range is so good. I have the 909 driver but can not justify spending the money on the 910 driver as I am driving so badly at the moment that it would be no help. When I am booming the driver off the tee again I will get a 910D3.

I am told that having common shafts across your woods is a wise idea. Mine are not all the same but are very similar with the same characteristics. Stiff, mid kick with what I think is lots of feel.

As always the starter for 10 is knowing what you want out of a shaft.

I get what you mean monty, to me it makes sense aswell but i would still search for your driver and 3 wood differently as you may find you love a particular 3 wood but just can't get on with the driver :) however I would be surprised if you got on with a 3 wood from one range but not a 5 wood from the same range :)

Let me know when you're getting rid of you're current driver (910) then Murph.

;) :p

No.

I'm actually really tempted at the moment to go and try the Mizuno MP driver with the Fubuki shaft as I love my hybrid with that shaft.

Would have to go some to improve on my 910 but the shiny devil on my shoulder keeps talking to me about trying the Mizuno one....

No

Driver was courtesy of Ping/GM and a lovely freebie it was too.

3 wood was the best performing one in a load I tried on a launch monitor , TM R9 ti btw

Yup! Had the driver for a while before I decided I needed a 3 wood. Tried the Razr Hawk but it just wouldn't set up right for me, even though it's a sweet club. As soon as I had the r11 it looked right and gave me loads of confidence. I'm pretty sure it's more in my head than anything scientific though.

Mine was as a result of being the best I hit rather than an undying love of TM. I have to be honest and say I fancy a crack with the G20 so that may change the set up. I did have an R7 Ltd for a long time rather than all Burners but my quick tempo and the lighter shaft weren't always compatable

Got the 910 driver - but not sure how long for - but I have a 13 degree 3 Cleveland 3 wood in as my driver + a 17 degree Cleveland. Not matching, just updated versions.

Can be useful to match them but to be honest you should use whatever works best for you.

I have all Ping i15 woods with standard Stiff shafts....
Not really an OCD thing its just that this shaft seems to suit my swing....

The only thing that im missing is either a 5 wood or a 17 degree rescue....One will be added soon.

Erm, see below......

Mine do not match for the same reason as many others, I have never changed them all at the same time so what I hit best at the range has varied. That said, given the cash I would certainly have a go with the 3 wood to match the new Mizuno driver. The driver has been a revelation and made a huge difference to me off the tee so would like to see if the 3 wood lives up to that.

Mine are matching, they were bought separately from ebay with no previous trial, they just seemed to have good write-ups, were in my price bracket and I liked the look of them.

For all I know they could both be rubbish for me, I've never been fitted and haven't tested any other drivers or 3 woods. They have different shafts which isn't great (although both are stiff) but I seem to muddle along okay with them.
