My dad's bugging me about christmas presents, he wants to get me some decent waterproofs, either FootJoy or Galvin Green. For those two brands (and if applicable, the lines eg Hydroknit, HydroTour) do you buy a size larger than your usual size, as it goes over other stuff, or is that designed in to the item and you just buy normal size?

Ta

Nope - they are designed already to be worn over other golf clothing

Hydroknit - the trousers are designed to be worn as normal trousers as opposed to be over the top of others

The top is the same - it’s mid layer fitting

Hydro Tour and Galvin Green etc - get your standard size

My own experience with most of these things is that the sizes vary so much between different manufacturers and often between different models of the same brand that I would always get on a sale or return or try for size before I buy.

Not as a rule. Hopefully I can try them on and see. My Under Armour waterproof jacket is a medium and it's designed to be loose-fitting anyway so absolutely fine over a jumper. But I also own a FootJoy Hydroknit pullover for summer showers, and I had to get a large for that as their sizing is seemingly a little different. Probably moreso because it was a pullover rather than a zip-up one.

It would be really helpful if the website you order from gives the actual measurements (like County-Golf does), or if you can get to a store and actually try them on.

Galvin Green tends to be quite 'athletic fit' and potentially a little tight, unless you are an athletic fit person ;). I think they are a tough one to gauge without trying on.

I have a FJ hydroknit, large, and that is an accurate size. Slightly athletic rather than comfort, but not tight. If you are borderline, go up a size with FJ

I also have a Sunderland waterproof jacket, for when it really is honking it down, and that is spot on in terms of sizing.

There's really nothing to me so I probably don't have to worry about things being too tight. The reason I need something water/wind-proof is because otherwise I'd either wash or blow away

I flit between L and XL in Footjoy.
I have Large in the HydroTour jacket, I tried XL and it was too baggy, arms too long.

The problem I had with waterproof trousers was keeping them up, I was forever hitching them up. I invested in a pair of braces & it's one of the best buys I've made. They were so good I bought another two pairs for my dog walking & working trousers too. I remember when I used to have a waist!

For the top yes for the trousers it depends on their use as I often wear just waterproof trousers and not WPs over ordinary trousers

I hate tight fit clothing even if it does stretch.

Me to .

I find it’s the arms that is the problem.
Bought a Mizuno Xxl jacket and can’t get my arms in it.
UA perfect fit for me Xxl.
but Galvin Green Xxl is tight across the shoulders.

Same with shoes a must try on first.

No. Size medium is designed to be worn by a medium sized person. The problem is that every brand has a different definition of a medium sized person.

So try before you buy. Or buy from a brand where you already know your size.
