Do you know your members

So if your know the people doing it why havent you reported it ?

As I said. I 'know of' these people. Without details the police are uninterested. Lack of a surname is a barrier. I also know of people who are drinking underage, taking illegal substances, littering and who occasionally drift a tad north of the speed limit. Luckily the police appreciate someone calling 28 times a day with this information that has no way of being confirmed.

Shady post this.... Wandering around clubs when you have seen signs telling you not to saying things like "I could have taken a set of clubs" and "people I know make a good living out of...."

Shabby stuff, golf is supposed to be about honor.

Must have misinterpreted your first post - appeared that you knew who they are

We have CCTV round and in the clubhouse and, this year, we have employed a Marshall who hasn't caught anyone on the course who shouldn't be there

Good God man, he's only saying that he was wandering around the club because he wanted to see what it was like and maybe talk to someone about having a game / joining. Some golf courses I've been to there sometimes is no one about and it makes me wonder how these places are policed regarding making sure everyone pays. Even at my place it is possible to pull on to the car park and get on the 10th or 17th without going anywhere near the pro shop.

Know a fair few.

Im not convinced that we don't just get guys turn up and play of an evening without being members or paying.

Starter finishes at 3-4pm pro shop closes at 5.30 and is well away from the first tee.

Thanks for the tip off Patrick

:D

Something we discuss from time to time and I'm sure it goes on at a lot of places on those long summer evenings in particular. If you've got the gear, the inclination and the front to be brass-necked enough about winging it then I'm sure there are many who will and do.

A neighbouring club started doing spot-checks back in August and caught quite a few 2 & 3-ball chancers in the space of just two weeks.

Shabby!

I'm aware of a course that did an exercise on a Saturday & Sunday checking members subscriptions as they arrived on the 1st tee, it was discovered there were a lot of 5-day members turning up to play and had played for some time at weekends who had dropped down to the 5-day membership after being 7-day members for quite a few years prior, this, to the everyday member would go totally unnoticed or challenged unless you had been informed by them personally that they'd changed their membership status as they were always around the club and as such weren't strangers to anyone, very deceitful, personally I'd throw them all out of the club that did that

I know of several people who made a very good living out of going to nice courses (Gleneagles etc) where there are a lot of visitors. They would dress in nice chinos and a polo shirt, walk around a bit and each pick up the bag with the most expensive gear in it and walk off. Flog it wherever for £200-£300 for a tidy mark up. It is ridiculously easy to do when golfers leave everything lying around and no one thinks twice when you look the part.

Must confirm, not friends of mine or a behaviour I would condone. Just people I know of.

I've often thought that, if I were that way inclined, golf clubs would be a very soft target for some pilfering. Much easier to nick clothes, shoes, bags, even clubs, from a changing room or trolley park than from a shop. My clubs are about ten years old and usually covered in mud - I'm hoping that this is an effective theft deterrent.

My club is quite quiet, and the layout of the buildings, and the close proximity of the car park, entrance, and first tee to the pro shop, means that visitors are seen very quickly by the pro. But, let's face it, if someone in golf gear, picked up a set of clubs, and you didn't know who's clubs they were, nobody would bat an eyelid. My last club had around 550 members, and I knew maybe only 5% of them during my time there, so I certainly wouldn't have a clue as to who is or isn't a proper member. The buildings had a much more complicated layout, with lots of blind spots, so it would be really easy for someone to swipe somebody's clubs and put them in their car and drive off. Bang them on eBay for £600 and the job's a good one.

It reminds me of the Phoenix Nights episode, where the lads in the overalls steal the TV, and nobody says anything because they were wearing overalls. Maybe Hi-Vis would be more appropriate nowadays.

Even though I've only been at my new club for a few months, I'd trust the small group of members there with my life. Some lads I played with last week mentioned that a member borrowed £1000 from his playing partner on Saturday morning for a family emergency, and he gave him £1200 back the very next day. It's great that such solidarity comes from members at a golf club.

And what did the club actually do. Seems very naughty. We have a marshall who every so often will do a random check for bag tags (to stop people sneaking on) and reports people back to the club.

I feel the same at my club. We're a small club in a small place and everyone knows everyone else. I actually think if everyone lined up their golf bags I could match them to their owners.

I know a few members at my club but by no means all of them and all the above comments are relevant.

Anyone with a bit of front, and suitably dressed, could come into the club. OK it has a tag entry but it's easy to say to someone that you've forgotten your keys, or wait for someone to go in the club and follow them. Then it's just a question of walking around, seeing what you fancy, shoving any clothes/shoes into a sports bag, picking up a bag of clubs, and walk out. 5 minute job.

Sad but true.
