I went to have a quick knock after work tonight at a club I have never been to as I pulled up and theres a big sign no public. I noticed they where doing a introduction offer of £365 for the year. Looking at the time I decided it was a bit late to play so I had a snoop around I could of had a practice on any of the practice areas or even rocked up to the first and teed off without paying nobody seamed to be bothered that a stranger was creeping around the place I even spoke to a few people asking questions that would raise some alarms. I could of walked off with someone s clubs. My question is would you notice a stranger at your club

If it was a confident stranger then no as the vast majority of our members are confident and chatty. If it was a quiet shifty looking geezer wearing a fake moustache then I'd spot him and shout stranger danger stranger danger as I was taught to do in my membership interview. I know what you mean as some members leave there clubs outside and any one can just have them away.

No, not at my current place. Only been there just over a year. At my last place, where I'd been a member since the 80's, probably a couple of hundred. But that still leaves a few hundred more. Can anyone know 500+ members? I guess that's what bag tags are for.

There another club I go to that if you are unscrupulous you can park your car around the corner and get on at the second without paying. At 1 point you used to get people asking everyone you see for there ticket

Ive always thought it strange we don't have bag tags but, our 1st tee is only accessed and in full view of our Pro shop.

We have had a lot of new members coming into the club over the last eighteen months so possibly not. I've been to a lot of clubs and it's fairly easy to be confident, especially if you've been there before and know your way round. I guess the only defence we have is that the locker room can only be accessed by member swipe card (and I have a locker) so my clubs are relatively safe. Bag tags should distinguish members

Wouldnt have a clue! Suppose them not having a bag tag would be the only way i would know. You can easily park in the car park and go straight to the 1st tee as you have to walk through the car park to reach the 1st. Reception cant see the tee so would never know.

If there was a sign saying "no public" why did you go and snoop around without going to the pro shop and asking the relevant questions? Did I miss something?

The no public is on the access road to the club. I parked my car and went looking for the pro shop I did a lap of the club as it was on the opposite side but it was closed when I got there

No chance. I play at the same time every week so I know the regulars who do similar, and few other "faces" who are well known at the club. But other than that I haven't a clue.

Know a fair few.

Im not convinced that we don't just get guys turn up and play of an evening without being members or paying.

Starter finishes at 3-4pm pro shop closes at 5.30 and is well away from the first tee.

I know of several people who made a very good living out of going to nice courses (Gleneagles etc) where there are a lot of visitors. They would dress in nice chinos and a polo shirt, walk around a bit and each pick up the bag with the most expensive gear in it and walk off. Flog it wherever for £200-£300 for a tidy mark up. It is ridiculously easy to do when golfers leave everything lying around and no one thinks twice when you look the part.

Must confirm, not friends of mine or a behaviour I would condone. Just people I know of.

Im sure you have let the police know who these people are and have let them know what's going on ?

Being 12yrs at my place next month, I probably know a few hundred members by sight - but we've taken in a lot of new members over the last 18months and I don't know a lot of them. If I wasn't sure of someone, and I was bothered, I might just engage in a bit of conversation, introduce myself; say I hadn't seen him about, and ask if was he a new member and when did he play, who did he play with.
