Do you do this when putting?

Bob Rotella suggests doing it in practice rounds in his putting book - Putting Out of Your Mind I think it is. Idea is it gets you target focused rather than swing mechanics focused. He says it helps you to think like you do when you throw a ball to someones hands - you don't think how to throw, you instinctively know, so you just focus on the target.

He made hale irwin do it for a whole round and irwin ended up shooting the course record using this technique

Its a fairly decent practice drill, gives confidence. On the course I would rather look at the ball as I make the shot to minimize effect of distractions. Last thing I want is to be looking up and flinching at something while over a 3 foot birdie putt!

Doesn't sound like any advice I've ever heard, I can appreciate it would probably benefit distance control as you would stare at the hole of you were throwing the ball, but I personally would be equally likely to chunk the putter on the grass and not make a good contact.
