Hi chaps,do any of you ignore the ball and ONLY look at the whole when making your putting stroke? This was recommended to me by a pal who is a great putter! Is he a bit mad or not? Ta:confused:

I've heard of it and tried it in practice but don't do it on the course, I would imagine it would take a lot of getting used to

I tend to do this on my practice stroke, helps me feel the weight I need for the length. No way would I do it with the ball in front though. I struggle to hit the ball dead centre when I'm looking at it let alone when I'm not?!

Bob Rotella suggests doing it in practice rounds in his putting book - Putting Out of Your Mind I think it is. Idea is it gets you target focused rather than swing mechanics focused. He says it helps you to think like you do when you throw a ball to someones hands - you don't think how to throw, you instinctively know, so you just focus on the target.

only on a practice putt which I liken to throwing a ball at something, I dont look at the ball when throwing, but you know its position in your hand, on the actual stroke I look at the ball.

except when I have a 3 footer to win a bounce game, usually look at the person you're about to beat after taking your stance, then tap it in while still looking at them:rofl: always good for a titter!:smirk:

Ironically Mr Rotella fails to note that the other hands normally moves to catch the ball when you throw a crap 'un :p

Unfortunately on my course the hole rarely moves to the ball, surprisingly though it does seem to move out of the way slightly

Seriously though, how many times can you under-arm throw a golf ball into a coffee cup out of 10 from 8ft?

I've done it a few times and it seems to work really well on long putts, but not so well on putts within 15 feet for some reason. I will look at the hole on a practice stroke but now I've gone back to focusing completely on the ball as I am playing the stroke and not looking up at the hole until the ball has moved out of my peripheral vision and that's what works for me.

Cheers Woody,good info mate!

Somebody I know uses this method and he swears by it. Says he putts a lot better this way. He must be awful putting the conventional way (looking at the ball), because he isn't much good when he is looking at the hole. The last time ime I played with him he must have 3 puuted at least 6 times, and this was during the summer on decent greens.

Yikes,maybe not a technique for everyone,eh?
