Do we really need 14 clubs?

A bit more differential between those that truly have it, and those who are very good, but one dimensional.

Personally, I don't really see a need for golf on telly every week. It's too samey.

Journey man pro, equals anyone who wins by being the best boring golfer who turns up that week. Yep, it's tough to win, and if it was me, I'd love it, but winning when the top guys aren't there is just paying the bills. You're not kidding anyone that you're any good.

It's like watching Watford play footy.

By being on the tour they are by default better than good but let's not dismiss their achievements with such disdain whilst we struggle to hit our handicap
It's quite simple for you - don't watch the golf , don't use 14 clubs , don't use a brand new driver with the best shaft in it - you have a choice

You are right, I do. And I don't watch much golf, it's too boring. But then as said before, if televised golf can't appeal to golfers, who the heck is going to watch it? It's competing against entertainment, so it needs to be entertaining, as opposed to formulaic.

As for having the driver with the best shaft in it, sure, but hasn't it all got a bit technical, a bit optimised, a bit computerised, and not enough to do with feel, flair, fun, talent, make something work?
If you can make it work, and someone else can't, then you've got an advantage. If you both get computer fit to the nth degree, then you are the same. Wow, that's great, but dull.

But millions of golfers do watch golf - millions do find it entertaining - I enjoy watching the European Tour - with the viewing figures still pretty good im going to guess people are still entertained by golf

I notice you have the latest Big Bertha ? I'm guessing your actions don't match your feelings ? Why not bin it and get a persimmon one ? And not two golfers are the same regardless of the club in their hand - each person's unique swing makes everyone different

I completely get where your coming from murph,I've dropped sky sports because it's got so boring, I wan't to see flair and shotmaking not identakit players, only Bubba really has the shot making skills these days.
I don't know if limiting the number of clubs would do this but something needs to be done

if they mixed it up a bit it would be better, links on week, matchplay the next, but as you say the same type every week, and tbh they generally show the putting all the time, be as well show adventure golf as it's more interesting. Worrying as I'm a golf nut and should lap it up

But there is not too much golf on poor people's terrestrial TV, because it's all been nicked and held to ransom by Sky Sports!
Probably Lewis Hamilton's win in BBC's Sports Personality of the Year was due to his sport being shown regularly on BBC TV, while most of Rory's great endeavours, apart from his British Open win, where hidden away on Sky TV and not seen by the general voting public!

Sky sports have actually increased the amount of golf that can be watched

They haven't "nicked" or "held to ransom"

Thry have been willing to pay the money needed to broadcast the golf

Yes, but not everyone is saying that Golf is now boring! I don't watch that much golf any more. I cancelled my Sky subscription as it became boring. I will watch the Majors and some of the bigger tournaments though..

Not really. The thread has evolved into a debate regarding why some think that golfers are "boring" and the game requires changing to encourage more flair into the pro game..

Whether we need 14 clubs --> Change the Rules to fewer than 14 clubs --> ban Lob Wedges --> Pro game is boring --> but no/little terrestrial Golf shown .... Have I missed any?

Actually, subscription money only makes up a moderate percentage of the turnover. Advertising and investment contributes far more.
The BBC would rather spend your licence money (compulsory tax to the point where most people accept it and deem terrestrial as 'free to air' where thats simply not true) on costume drama and 'celebrity' reality contests than the golf, the football or pretty much any other sport.

Sky have made more sports accessible to more than 10 million people ober a course of planned investment and promotion rather than this seemingly underhand theft tactic that seems to be being purported.

If you don't think it represents valie for money then thats fine, thats your cultural values at work. I am sure many out there wont think your golf subs represent value for money and as you pay them, I would think you would disagree.

I never do use a full set during the Winter because I prefer to carry my golf bag, and throwing a few clubs out makes it lighter. Then I can keep my hands in my pockets between shots to keep them at least vaguely warm, and I don't have to manoeuvre a trolley around all the roped off areas. I do use more or less a full set in the Summer because:
a) I'm allowed to.
b) The trolley takes the weight.
