Folks,

I'd like to video my swing to check on the things i'm working on in between lessons. Before making brackets etc can i ask if any of you folks do this and have any tips.

I'm planning to start by making a bracxket for my ipad to clamp to a beam running along the back of the range. The problems I foresee are:

1) filming looking from a covered bay into the sunlit (well, sometimes!) range - will i only be a dark outline?
2) Frame rate - will i actually see meaningful swing when viewed back slowly?

So, anyone been down this route and have some tips?

Simon

I do this occasionally, but have a high frame rate camera and tend to either use a tripod (rarely) or get someone to film me. I would check someone recording you on the Ipad to see if the quality is good enough (our pro uses his iphone which is plenty good enough) before building a bracket (can you not buy one?)

What height is the beam at, you probably dont want it any higher than waist high and preferably a little lower to film down the line.

I use my Xperia Z to record a few swings. I have the V1 swing analysis app as well which is really useful and was only a pound. I find the frame rate is not an issue. If you want real super slo mo then casio do some excellent cameras.

I've got a Casio camera which can do 310 fps and the quality is good enough for swing analysis. The camera needs to have exposure compensation set which means the background will be burned out but the swing will be visible.

I find that 200 FPS on the casio is fine. Good light is needed

I use an IPhone and the V1 program on the laptop. It gives enough quality to be more than useful.. I just prop the phone up against the back wall on a handy waist high shelf and record 2 or 3 swings.. Upload it onto the laptop and drop it into the V1 program... More than good enough for my swing..

There's a bench at the back of the range I use most - I have a cover for the iPad which folds out so I just stood it up using that - If I'm checking something I'd usually use my iPhone because that's always with me - I just lean it against back of the bench - works fine.

As to quality - you don't need much to check your swing photo.jpg

The pro that I use films using his iPad. He also has some software installed which he uses as an aid during playback. Drawing lines and circles etc. Not sure if this is already installed software or a specialist golf app. The results from the camera are perfectly adequate.

Beware, if you have not seen a video of your swing before it can be a real eye-opener the first time you do.

Been thinking along similar lines and I've decided to pull out the GoPro Hero which will pull video through at 60fps on 720p. I'm able to rely upon an ideally-placed girder in the structure of the range shelter which sits just above waist height.

Also planning on doing a bit of video of side-on to see how my hip movement is going. It was always a problem of mine, too much sideways and downwards pressure.

I use an ipad mini and balance it on the top of my golf bag secured by a couple of clubs. I record on a free app, Ubersense, which does everything i want in a golf swing viewer and I can email swings of others to them
