DIY grips

So after trying to find some grips I like I decided to give a friend of mine a call who can get the factory grips which I love of a knocked down price of FREE
Now I'm the sort of person who loves a bit of DIY and I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to fit these on my own but just wondering if any one and any experience of doing this and if so did you regret it ? Also I assume I just need a bit of wd40, maybe a Stanley knife and big muscles to pull them off ( which I don't have ) and what adhesive tape is the best.

If your getting the grips for FREE as you say, Why not get your Pro to fit them for you, should not be too expensive and you both come out winners.....

Stanley knife to cut old grips off and blade to clean shaft. White spirit rather than wd40 if you google or you tube you'll find some helpful videos. Double sided tape. It's gets easier after you've done a couple.

Don't use WD40. Paint thinners(turps) or lighter fuel(which I use). A straight blade is ok with steel shafts. But with graphite use a curved blade(like a carpet cutting blade). If your not very careful a straight blade will score the graphite. Any decent double sided tape will do. If you want all the bits can be got from Gamola.

Golfdub, I do all my own grips, it's easy. As above a stanley knife (hooked blade recommended for graphite shafts), whitespirit for putting the new grip on and new tape is all you need. You can actually buy pre-cut strips of 2" tape so that all you need to do is apply it.
If you have a vice in the shed then you can get a rubber vice clamp from various places to hold the shaft while protecting it.

One point to note is, if you do go ahead your self, use something (I use Tippex) to mark the position of the old grip. Usually the grip has little white or black markers that show you the line for straight so it's important to know where your new grip needs to be to match.
