Our club is hosting a divoting evening to help out the Green staff chip butties and drink for all who help out after the event as a thank you.
Does your club hold such events and if it did would you give a few hours of your time to go?

No and yes definitely - we have working parties for other stuff as well

We are encouraged to take out a divot bag, filled with soil and grass seed mixture.

Just like being back in NZ and Oz where you have to take a bucket of sand with you to fill in divots

Yeah my club does it. Usually in the morning though so makes it hard for me now since switching from shifts to a 9-5 job. Usually get a coffee and scone before heading out and sandwiches upon return. I enjoyed it.

we've run 1 a year for the last couple of years, and will run 2 this year.

it's generally the same people prepared to give their time and that includes the committee

I agree with this sentiment usually the ones that do not put their divots back are notable by their absence.

We have also had course clearing evenings which I did when I had more time on my hands. Problem was that I had a habit of finding (and upsetting) wasp nests. Then the nest would be torched (after I had been stung to death). Then the fire brigade would turn up as starting fires in the middle of summer isn't such a good idea!

Ours have got two on this week iirc but in the morning so rules me out.

I would attend if it was an evening i could make etc.

You cant blame the course for playing crap if you dont help out where possible ;)

That should be told to every muppet who doesnt fill in a divot or repair their pitchmark on the green or drive their buggy across areas they know or soft or take trollies around areas where the ground is soft

If members cant look after their own course then they have no cause to complain

I will be taking part as I was only on about it to drawboy as we played Saturday hopefully on a Sunday afternoon but if they used fairway mats during winter we would only need to do this halfway through a season

We don't have such an evening, the green staff are able to keep on top of the problem but if we did i would help out, only being a member for the past couple of years it is quite a nice way to meet others.

iirc, when I played isle of purbeck they had a divot cart. Essentially a cart filled with bottles of soil / seed mix. You picked up a bottle and filled 6 / 7 divots on your jorney down the fairway and there was a bin ofr empty bottles at the next tee. Quite a right of passage as only a tee shot on the fairway 'earned the righted' to pick a bottle so a bit of banter / fun along the way made the difference. They then move the set up round the couse so everything gets done over time. Good idea I thought.

I went out with a couple of chaps last week and again with five others this afternoon for a couple of hours (before we got drenched in the pouring rain). We managed to achieve quite a lot. The greenkeeping staff is relatively small and it probably wouldn't get done otherwise, or at least not as thoroughly.

No reward though, not even a cup of tea!
