Distance

I just looked at this with regards to how I played today. If I had hit it further would I have shot lower? The answer to that is no as a couple of drives that went inot the r/h rough would have gone into the trees and maybe cost me a couple of shots. With better putting I would have shot level par easily.

Hitting a driver a long way is hard. Every thing is moving, you're hitting eyeballs out, no holding back. Tough to control. Difficult to increase your club head speed without losing control, or doing something detrimental.

Putting? Why is it so hard? You're only knocking it 60 ft tops, how hard can it be? Pick a line, swing the club, bingo. Easy. You have a choice of grips (from standard to down right weird), you can go face balanced, heel toe, belly, broom, You can look at the ball, look at the hole, close your eyes, how hard can it be?

Obviously very hard......lol! The plan is when the weather gets better to have a putting lesson then go and get custom fit, as everyone I know that has done this all say that on average they have less putts a round. Regarding what you say about hitting big drives it is all about just letting it go from the top for me and not worrying about it as when I do it goes wrong and can go anywhere.

If you have a right to left wind thats helping its a lot better to hit 3 wood then driver as its easier to draw a 3 wood to get the distance , on my home course its no use hitting it long if you not straight as you wont find it , some holes like 10th and 16th maybe , on the rest , best policy is keep it in play , cant score with a lost ball , its same on all courses i guess , but in play is the by word on some more then others and having a great short game is much better then having mega distance off the tee , average distance will do

Another for the straighter than longer side, I think that is 4 now........:mmm:. Ok there people who do not hit it far and I appreciate that it easy for people like to say they are not bothered about any more distance. But the average golfer is hitting what, about 240 from the tee and a 7i 150. So how many people can't get to most of the par 4s at their track with a driver and 7i/6i in the summer. We are not playing tour courses and the average of the par 4s at my place is 372 yards and my track is 6500 off the whites, so not a short course.

We're 6206 yards off the whites, par 70 and the average par 4 is 378 yards. Most of the people I play with can't get onto at least 75% of the par 4s in 2.

As a fairly short hitter this has been an interesting thread.

Given that the average length of the par 4s at my course is 402 I think I would benefit from being able to hit every club say 17 yards further ;). Certainly an extra 20 or so yards off the tee would make a lot of the approach shots much easier.

However I don't think a new set of clubs is going to deliver that for me whatever the manufacturers say. As many have noted, it's usually just a matter of cranking the lofts in any event. Why do I need a new 6 iron that flies 160 when I can just hit a 5.

I'm more likely to improve my scores by working with what I've got and making sure if I do have a long shot to the green at least I'm hitting from the fairway and if I miss the green that I'll have a fair chance of getting up and down.

Played a round with a 6 handicapper yesterday, He hit his drives out of sight at least 50 yards futher than me.
But during the round we were chatting and his attitude was yes its great to be able to hit the driver a long way
but most of his good work is done within 150 yards and knowing distance with each club is more important than
smashing it off the tee, His attitude was forget new sticks learn your distance and your game will improve
as a high handicaper I found this very refreshing and thats my plan for the new season :)
