Distance - When Do You Stop?

not sure i agree about a 3 wood going as far as possible, if it went the same distance as a driver why have a driver?

for me i want a 3 wood that doesn't go as far as driver as thats a club i use to lay up on a couple of par 4's to be short of Burns and bunkers.
It's unlikely a 3 wood would go as far as a driver but, if it did, I'd still want it because I can't hit a driver off the deck & the distance woud be useful at times.

I can't hit a driver for toffee, but my 3 wood goes further than most PP drives. Really wish I could hit driver to see if this statement is true.

I have recently started striking the ball alot better and I'm finding this sort of issue. 9 Iron is 140, Pw is 130. That means that my 52degree is having to see me from 120-1. It's alot to ask of one club when I'm stretching out the top end distance to 456.3 yards approximately. I've managed quite well the past few weeks with one club, but it just begs a different question doesn't it.

Everything within your pitching wedge can be covered by half shots etc. Once you learn exactly how to play 3/4 or 1/2 shots consistently you will see some great improvements and cover the distances. For example- PW@ 130- 1/2@ 65 3/4@ 95.

Learn this with your 9i, PW and 52* and you can cover a lot of distances.

My favourite shot is a half punch PW, always get a rewarding finish from that!

But if your 3 wood went as far as your driver and you wanted to have the 3 wood to play off the deck surely you would get rid of the driver and that lets you carry another wedge or other scoring club?

I have seen many players who hit their 3 as far as their driver, sometimes its using newer woods than driver etc.

I've done exactly that but with the 52. It's my utility club that seems to get used on most holes at the moment.

distance* always good particularly if the courses you play aren't overshort in length (*as long as it's with repeatable accuracy) so chance to hit shorter irons into the pin. with some judicious 'work' you can always work the gaping to suit. (driver, 3 metal, hybrid. driver, 3 metal, 2i. driver, 3 metal, 5 metal.)

also if you have a 3 metal that gets out there near driver distance again with some repeatable accuracy, it gives you a choice if faced with a tighter landing area from the tee on holes that still have some length to them, providing you can still use that 3 metal & get repeatable good results from the ground.

When I'm out driving PP with a 3 wood I can't justify 3 months membership money on a new club that might get me 10-20 yards?

What have your playing partners got to do with it?
10-20 yards would mean shorter clubs into greens and could see your handicap tumbling.

A forum short hitter (about 230 yards) and so could always do with a few more yards but I'd rather be better from 150 yards and in, and definitely be more clinical from 100 yards in. Distance while nice, isn't the be all for me
