Just played 9 holes on a course just outside Chicago. Aesthetically it looked fantastic. Manicured fairways, great big bunkers and lakes/ponds that look beautiful.
The problem was the rough. While the fairway was like the greatest british putting green ever (bouncy, perfect length and soft) the rough was rediculous. Each blade of grass was about 3-4 mm thick while being atleast 2 inches tall standing straight up. When off the fairway the top of the ball was lower than the height of the grass. No chance of playing anything lower than a 7 iron and even then id struggle to get 100 yards from it.
Not only that but the green was like putting on glass. It was like a cricket wicket. Putted from the green to off it twice!!!!
The yank i played with just thought it was rediculous that i thought the grass was different to back home. Although the course looked fantastic give me a good ol british course anyday.
Somehow managed to scrape 50 from 9 holes but left highly embarressed at some of the duffs from the rough.
