Did anyone see Ernie Els shoes at Wentworth?

I have no idea what they were but I thought he looked ridiculous. Maybe Ernie has got to an age where comfort is more important than sartorial elegance??

The shoes are the same as the ones that old men wear to go to British seaside resorts that are past their best. They should only be worn with trousers that have an elasticated waistband and enough space for a colostomy bag to be concealed.
 
Black with a white band and no spikes?

If so interesting you point out Ernie but I think Rose was wearing them too (Ashworth Cardiffs). By no means the best looking shoe, but better than the trainer effect spikeless ones imo, and so so comfy
 
have you been living under a rock. they are all the rage. there has been umpteen threads on here too about the pros and cons of these new type of golf shoes. we know what camp you have your traditionally styled spiked foot in.
 
I do quite fancy some spikeless shoes for comfort reasons, especially as I've got a few 36 hole society days over the summer.

However I can't get past what they look like. On Snelly's theme, they do look like something that you may find in the back of a sunday supplement

Living under a rock? Metaphorically it would seem so yes, as I had no previous idea that these monstrosities were on the market. I still have no idea as to why anyone would buy a pair.


And yes I did see Rose wearing them too. He looked equally daft.


Named after Cardiff though? That explains a lot. Clearly aimed at the municipal golfer or the Welsh.

Well Im neither Welsh or a muni golfer, if theyre good enough for Els/Rose and comfier than any other golf shoe Ive worn then they'll do for me, I dare say my snob rating a fair bit lower than yours though Snelly

Quite possibly, but it isn't about snobbery. It is about aesthetics.

Still at least you don't need to change if you want to go crown green bowling after 18 holes.

did you not hear mr allis remark yesterday that the players wear them to allow them to do their fancy footwork easier as apposed to the old cloggs that players of my dads era would have used.
 
My first pair of golf shoes were spikeless, but the knobbles wore down before the shoes wore out.

At least with soft spikes you can keep replacing them
 
As others have said, the dimpled soled golf shoes have been around for decades. Had a couple of pairs in the past as a lighter more comfy shoes for summer... still offered plenty of grip on dry ground.

The major innovation has been making them look more like trainers or octogenarians' leisure shoes. I would draw the line at ones with a velcro fastening :mad:

I know that, I had a pair of Stylos in the 80's that had the knobbly sole. What is new is that they look like they don't belong on a golf course and people that wear them look like they have come straight from their local ten pin bowling alley and forgotten to change....
 
Just bought a pair of the Ecco Biom Hybrids just whats needed for playing baked hard ground on links courses all summer, don't see what the big deal about them is to be honest if there comfortable wear them.

I think you must have been living under a rock. 90% of golfers I see daily, wear an item(s) that don't belong on the course. What makes it worse, is that they wear it so ill fitted.
 
Bought some trainer style soft-spiked Nikes when I went back to NZ in early 90s and they were supremely comfortable.

Got some strange looks when I wore them over here - and figured it was purely because of the 'traditional' market, or snobbery - even though their comfort was unsurpassed by 'traditional' golf shoes.

These ones may be comfortable for the likes of Fred Couples or others with specific issues, but it seems top me that it's merely a marketing push by the shoe companies.

I may be nearing 60 but, having found some Ecco 'proper golf shoes' to be really comfortable for me, I won't be participating.

And Snelly. That rock you've been under must have been quite large!
 
Have you noticed that all the tour players wearing them don't win anything anymore. Tiger, Ernie, Freddy, Justin???

I'm starting to take umbrage at all the posts insinuating that I have crawled from under a stone!!!

And all because I don't know about the latest footwear gimmick in golf! At least I hope that is why anyway.....
