The last 3 rounds I've begun suffering from about 6 really destructive shots each time out. Problem is they're not all the same! Yesterday I yanked one straight left(45 degrees!) at warp speed into the woods. I pulled at least one more, sliced a couple and hooked another 2. Each time I either lostthe ball or had to drop. Bleeding shots away like that isn't ever going to produce a score.

24,30 and 27 points in the last 3 outings - simply not good enough.

And to make matters worse I can still hit glorious shots inbetween these killers. I made a good par run for 3 holes, decent shots, good chips and putts. Next hole, I bad tee-shot and its another double-bogey. And its not just tee shots - hooked into the trees from just off the fairway, pushed, pulled etc etc etc....

I know my game is there, bubbling under, I know I can do it. I'm not sure whether its lack of concentration, poor swings, over-optimism or what. Inconsistent striking is a feature. I hit a great 8 iron that fell 10 yards short (no real wind to bother it), then hit another and went 10 yards long. I even carried my 50 degree wedge 140 yards on the last! Funnily enough I went through the back.....

Just know its doing my head in! CVG scores 38, Imurg scores 27. Not even a contest...........

I hate this game sometimes

Until I start playing well again!!!!!

I have just walked in after 5 holes and not scoring on 3 of them. I played last Sunday for a quick 9 and shot 24 with 2 7's, I just did everything wrong today and thought I am not wasting my time and come home :(

I too hate this game sometimes... until tomorrow ;)

My destructive shots are:-
Off the heel with fairway woods, they go at right angles left.
Head up, incomplete swing with irons, right angles right off an open face.
I can lose ten shots in a round that way. :(

Many faults!

The main one with me is the shot following a majestic drive.
On the tee everything feels right, grip, alignment, stance, ball position. Smooth steady swing and follow through to a text book finish. Watch the ball fly like a bullet right down the middle. Feeling great I then pick up my tee and march with a purposeful stride down the fairway toward my ball.
Judge distance, select club, quick waggle and follow the same routines as with the tee shot. This time the ball shoots off at a remarkable tangent....... why the hell does it do that? Screws my scores many, many times!

I really think I know what is causeing this, I think your hands may have got to close to your body on set up, when you are in the set up position you should have approx 4 and a half inches between your thigh and the butt of club. If you are to close it can lead to all these problems I know this from experience.

Why not post a vid of your swing?, at least then it will be possible to SEE what is going on.

All things being equal (assuming your grip, posture, alignment etc remain basically the same as when you hit your good shots) then you're possibly swinging too flat/steep (on the ones you try too hard), thereby not getting your weight properly to the left side and subsequently struggling to square the face properly as your hips open.... 'spinning out' as it's called. A vid is all you need. The root cause is often bad posture though.

regards...

edit: I just dug up this snippet which describes all of the shots you've hit....

Imurg, I’m with you, my game has gone off also. A few weeks back I was comfortably scoring low seventy rounds, I’m now struggling to break 80. The funny thing is, I’m hitting the ball better than I was when I was shooting lower scores.

Last week in an open competition at Dunbar, a 6550 yard course, I played the first 9 like a 20 Hc golfer and that’s not being unkind to a 20 HC golfer. The back 9 is the tougher 9 and I shot 36…..there is just no answer for this inconsistent drivel. Today I started with 5 straight pars with good chances for birdie at all of them. Then it was into the trees for a couple of holes to then hit two screamers up the par 5 9th, getting birdie, just missing eagle, to then visit the trees on the very next hole. At the last, a 440 yard into the wind hole, I hit a really good drive but it still needs a 4 iron to carry the dip in front of the green. I cut it OB into the car park, drop a second ball and end up 10 feet from the hole.

We’ve just got to play through this stuff. Besides, I cant give up, I’ve got too many golf balls in the drawer.

Can't really help BUT I've been playing super since double checking my distance from the ball. I've moved the smallest bit further away and the pull-type (over the top) shots have almost gone.

What I need to do more importantly is get myself ready to deal with the odd bad shot by not compounding things. I had a few games (more than 2 weeks ago) where I just did a Van de Velde on myself every time I hit a bad ball, turning one bad shot into two or maybe three! Lost balls, OOB and 45 degree shockers are not recoverable mostly, but taking the medicine and not fearing the bad shots too much normally helps me relax and play better.

I think its all those late nights with Di Stewart. Anyone else notice she's not on golf night and Imurg has lost form - coincidence???

Damn you Homer - the secret's out!!

This isn't really a cry for help just getting it out my system. And looking at a swing isn't going to solve it because there's not one bad shot but several and I havn't got the time to video dozens of swings to get the bad ones. A lot of the time things work well, just like everyone else I need to cut the rubbish out - I will look at Freddie's suggestion though.
