Five trips in 4 days including an emergency appointment with the Glasgow Dental Hospital this morning. Hopefully now sorted (minus 1 tooth later) and will be pain free and able to sleep.

Feel like a Zombie right now.

I guess like all things in life you get good and bad as I really think my own dentist has sold me short in terms of care and attention.

Hopefully all will be good from now. Certainly can't handle another day of excruciating pain.

Dentists are like all other tradesmen, sucking their teeth about what was done by the last one and then charging you plenty to repair it.
I share your pain btw - had a tooth out on Tuesday following a root infection that made me look like half a hamster (as well as being very painful). Reckon it'll still be a couple of days before some sort of normality is restored.

Dentists? Not for me. Got binned off by my last one 3 years ago for missing my appointment. They have a three strikes rule. I have missed 3, so out I go. 3 in 40 years I didn't think was so bad, but rules are rules, and so stuff them.

I go to a hygenist. It costs me 60 a pop, but it keeps them ok. I only have two fillings, and both of them are from decades ago.

A mate had veneers about 15 years ago on the advice of his dentist - he now needs 'work': estimates range from £15k to £20k. He's not impressed with the original dentist's advice who is now retired and spends his time flying/playing with his plane!!

Sounds like the veneers and those affected teeth are severely compromised and his dentist is recommending implants. It's not that unusual, especially after 15 years.
However that's a helluva quote, unless he is having up to 10 implants or he also needs lots of other work. Or he has a Harley Street dentist 😁😁

I've today been to see the hygienist - £30 notes on top of the usual NHS appointment fee. Not outrageous every 6 months or so. Remember reading the link between gum disease and heart disease. Made a conscious effort to keep my biannual appointments since.

I'm not being disrespectful I'm telling you my dentist had a catalogue of failures over a 3 day period where I visited him four times and he dismissed me every time, including the second visit where he told me my teeth were just sensitive, coated them and charged me for it!

How can a highly trained professional miss a huge abscess and a cracked tooth that couldn't be saved?

So your mate has had veneers in place which have lasted him for 15 years and he’s annoyed because they’re now failing and wants to blame the dentist who originally placed them? Crikey, he’s a tough customer isn’t he? Sounds like he wants the moon on a stick!

Let’s just speculate and say your mate had six veneers placed. Let’s further speculate that he paid Harley Street prices of a grand for each of them. £6 grand in total.

They’ve lasted him for 15 years. That works out at £400 per year. Or £33 per month. Let him know that that’s probably less than Sky TV is costing him. Or his mobile phone and internet subscription. Etc etc.

Ask your mate if he has similarly high standards for other wear items that he owns. How is the 6 grand car he bought 15 years ago? Still running smoothly I assume, cos if not I’m sure he’s similarly annoyed at the dealership that sold it to him cos he’s had to replace it since then.

What about his washing machine, television and fridge freezer? They all still working fine after 15 years? Assume so, since he expects it from his dental work.

So yeah my point is why does your mate expect dental work to last for more than 15 years when I bet he doesn’t apply the same logic to anything else? I guarantee you that if you offered any dentist the opportunity for their veneers to last 15 years, they would bite your whole arm off.
