Had a leak upstairs and there a small stain on the kitchen ceiling, ~ 6 inches square.

Have tried a couple of coats today but can still see it.

Have used Zinser in the past but don't really want to spend out on a tin for such a small job, anything I can try before i bite the bullet ?

TIA.

Have always used Zinsser, best by far. I understand the issue with not wanting to spend on a small area.

Have tried an aerosol one from tool station a few years ago. Was only a small patch and I did put about 3 coats, seemed to work fine, but terrible in an aerosol, terrible smell and splatter everywhere.

Any oil based undercoat or eggshell will do.

Paint out the stain and a further 3-4 inches all round, leave to dry over night then apply you finish paint.

Zinsser BIN or Zinsser Coverstain would be the best option and you could finish it all within a couple of hours, you can pick it up for less than £20
