Dealing with competition no-shows

My club had started introducing a firmer stance including a ban from comps for persistent offenders. Sadly it seems to be a case of if your face fits then you've carte blanche. There is a big group with a lot of the team players, single figure guys and basically the core of the club and there are several that take one look at a bit of rain or frost and don't show. No call or anything. No action. There have been a few others, same thing and a warning and then a ban without hesitation. Sadly thats the way out club is run. Its too scared to hack off the so called core (they think of themselves as the elite).

As an example, loads violated our no play in fog policy and went out. The club had to be seen to act so sent out letters banning them for 7 days with 5 suspended so they were effectively banned for two days. Which two days did the club choose? 22nd and 23rd December. Hardly going to have a huge effect and merely paying lip service. They've all seen it as one big joke and its enoforced their belief they are untouchable

Computerise your bookings with the BRS system (if you havent already) then make note of the no shows by those who didnt remove their name on time and red card them for the following weeks game.

I'm sure this is what we do after a couple of no shows.

There will always be someone with a justified reason for a no show but in this day and age with todays technology e.mail mobile phones etc think it is more down to blatant bad manners not to pick up a phone to the starter and let them know you will not be there, think being banned from next drawn competition would change most peoples ways.

Our comps are often over subscribed and there is a reserve list. No shows , without good reason, get a ban for 4 weeks.

The "without good reason" does make the rule difficult to enforce and i guess its there as more of a deterrent.

The problem we face is the first tee time in a comp is 8.00 and the pro doesn't get there until 7.30 and is rammed trying to get the cards out and people signed in so rarely has a chance to pick up the phone. The bar isn't open so no steward and so if you are out in the first groups and are genuinely ill it isn't uncommon to not get through until after your due time anyway and certainly not in time for one of the reserves to be called and get up to the club to take your slot
