Day trip to the home of golf...

So I visited the mecca (not bingo) of golf St. Andrews, I got off the mini bus and dragged the wife through the streets semi reading an A4 map the kind driver gave us, after passing numerous and I must say gorgeous students we arrive at the home of golf, a dream I have chased for the past 4 years of playing the game, we arrive at the 18th Green of the Old Course... I looked down upon the 18th with awe and checked out the four ball of Americans in their Jimmy hats and my heart sank. After having my pants pulled down in the little golf shop we went on the Himalaya’s putting green and witnessed a 3 ball all sink holes in one on the 7th whilst myself and wife left them 10 foot short but not bad for £2 each.

My question really is this, why do they allow people in trainers and jimmy hats to play? I would not be shocked at my local municipal by them but St. Andrews old course in front of the R&A?
 
I was a good experience and would love to play it like, just at £100+ GF and £50+ for a caddie you would have thought some dress codes might have been in place. We still had a great time walking around and things and would love to tee off straight down the middle.
 
Didn't see anything like that when we played a couple of weeks ago. Best £100 I have ever spent and you don't need a caddie to get round under handicap.:) The tee shot off the first wasn't the problem, it was the wee burn in front of the green that got me.:(

The drive over the railway shed and hotel on the Road Hole, now that was scary. Never teed the ball so high to make sure I didn't drill it into the shed which seemed so close.

Make sure that next time you get to play the Old Course.
 
St Andrews has more than its fair share of lovely looking students. If I ever went with my witch I'd be wearing sun glasses.
 
Not played the Old (when I went it was booked up by R&A members getting in practice rounds for their spring medal, guy at the Links Trust who I spoke to before aranging my trip didn't mention that.... grrr) but have walked up the 17th and 18th on a Sunday when there's no play. Even that was truely awesome. Never realised how big the 18th green is and how much it slopes.

Re dress code, I got this from the FAQs on the Links Trust site

"32. What is the dress code for the Old Course?
Golfers are expected to wear clothing appropriate for golf. Scruffy or town clothing is not considered appropriate. Tailored shorts are permitted. If in doubt please consult the Starter. The dress code is smart casual in the clubhouses."

Are you sure they were trainers? Might have been some new look golf shoes.
 
I was playing in a two ball behind an American four ball.. well at St Andrews it is more like an eight ball if you include the caddies!!

We were having to wait/linger as they held us up BUT who worries about lingering on the Old Course!

We were putting on the 16th and they were still on the 17th tee beside us and we assumed we were going to be let through but instead they had decided, as they had held us up, to give us their 'excess baggage' as they were going home the following morning ... four dozen golf balls, most still in their sleeves!!
