Davis Love Names Tiger As RC Vice Captain

This could be good for Tiger. It's a chance for him to do more with the media, and may be show a bit more personality in front of camera, as the questions should be more about the RC than specifically about him. It might bring him out of his shell a bit more.

I thought pretty much the only guy he didn't get on with was Phil Mick, and he doesn't look like making the team either.

I think the Americans will have a strong team next time out.

Tiger as a Captain of Vice...?
I can see that
An early announcement certainly and strange to include Jim in there, Stricker too...
They could qualify as of right, even Stricker with his limited schedule these days it's not implausible.
Could they be Playing V/Cs....?
Not a chance.
A VC has to follow groups, report to the Captain, keep things flowing so the main man can focus.
Long gone are the days of playing Captains

Good for the European team. Should distract the US team from the business in hand. To have the most single minded player as a vice captain in a team event just seems very strange. Perhaps the Americans need Tiger to be involved to get good viewing figures, spectators to the event, and pressure was put on Love ?:mmm:

Spot on.

I agree. Do people think Woods can be there as a player? Do they think a playing VC would work?

If Tiger manages to get into the bottom end of the top 20 in RC qualification, he will be a captain's pick. He is far and away the biggest box office in US golf and they won't miss what could be a last chance to include him.

He can't be a playing VC. The VC is a gopher for the captain, reporting on matches, getting stuff for the players, calming Patrick Reed down, that sort of thing.

Exactly.

I think it's irrelevant for the Euro team. Tom Watson's appointment for Gleneagles was widely lauded (included here on this forum) being seen as a masterstroke. Look what happened there.

We are better at the team event than they are and we find a way to win. The appointment of TW was obvious yet there's got to be a fundamental change in US approach to get near the Euros. They did have a think-tank session recently and I'm sure these three VCs were agreed as a result. If America lose it's business as usual, but if they win, then TW will be credited with helping to turn the ship around.

A smart PR move as mentioned before as removes the will he/wont he qualify or be a captains pick. My opinion is he wouldn't qualify, and pressure would be on Love to pick him (or not)
This keeps his involvement (appeases USA sponsors/TV ?) for a US based RC
It will be interesting to see his role as a VC...he doesn't seem the type to be a gopher. He maybe tasked with overseeing specific players....and probabaly not Lefty
The burning question is what role Michael Jordan will play next year

No matter how good each member of the USofA team is and how focussed they might be, I'm not too sure I'd want to be in a match under the watchful and critical eye of TW - distracting indeed.

Same as every year. Chief idiot. Hopefully he will do the same next time, "what's your success rate Michael?"

I think the Furyk and Stricker appts are strong ones, Tiger more for the sponsors as he clearly does not mix well. I think this one will be America's year as Europes team is in transition so DL should get away with it.

I can't see Woods being a lackey/gopher for anyone and I can see him being out on the course and reporting back. Nothing more than that. Whether that will be with rookies, and whether they will find that intimidating is something that will play out in time

I may of mentioned it once or twice on here:whistle: but I worked as a Marshall at Medinah and spent 6 days on the course, I can assure you, when he wasn't playing Tiger was on and around the course supporting team mates, one thing that did stand out was that wherever he walked on the course the American crowd were cheering and clapping him, it definitely lifted the atmosphere, OK we know the result, but the impact of simply having Tiger in the Team in some capacity cannot be understated.
Still believe he'll be used a scapegoat if it backfires. :D
