Davis Love Names Tiger As RC Vice Captain

So appoints someone who has shown throughout that he doesn't thrive in the team environment and is a divisive character - madness appointment so early

Also the guy that many of the younger guys grew up watching, wanting to be like and have massive respect for, it could actually be a great appointment and I suspect DL3 has more insight into Tiger's reputation on tour than we do.

Having raised the subject, my take is simple. I think Love recognises that Woods won't make the team by right, despite what Woods may say in public, but for whatever reason wants him on board. I find it strange when you look at his RC record and given the wealth of experience he (Love) has that he needs to have Woods alongside him. Woods clearly can be divisive in the team room. What I do think, is that if Woods isn't at the RC in some capacity it will send a huge message to both the US and Europeans, maybe even to Woods himself and I don't think Love is prepared to do that

Where is the evidence that Woods is divisive? Have any of the players actually said as much?

The US last won the RC when he was nowhere near the event - the stories of him being unable to work within the team environment have been known for ages. Not all the guys have massive respect for him.

Clever appointment, already takes out the will he/won't he be at The Ryder Cup and the media frenzy, takes the pressure of himself as the result will be down to Tigers appt win or lose.

A tacit acknowledgment that Tiger won't make the side but a promise he will be there anyway and will presumably be pushed out to do some press. Not that he ever says much, though.

Good for the European team. Should distract the US team from the business in hand. To have the most single minded player as a vice captain in a team event just seems very strange. Perhaps the Americans need Tiger to be involved to get good viewing figures, spectators to the event, and pressure was put on Love ?:mmm:

I agree. Do people think Woods can be there as a player? Do they think a playing VC would work?
Despite being the best golfer on the planet for many years, Tiger Woods does not have a particularly good Ryder Cup record, which suggests that he is not a good team player. I personally don't think he will work as a playing or non-playing vice captain!

More surprising than Woods potentially being a VC is Furyk's appointment as VC when he's still in the world top 10!

Have I missed Furyk saying he doesn't want to play?

Tiger been vice captain is a recipe for a disaster for USA
Although with him not playing he might get more into the team and not just about him

Funny as I see it the other way. If it is a disaster then Love will have to take responsibility for the decision.

I think Love is hoping that Tiger's single minded competitiveness can be translated to the team in the way that Seve's was. I think there's a chance that may work if Tiger has a formal team role rather than when just being a player. In addition, as indicated above the team is now made up of a new generation of players who grew up when Tiger was at his peak, so they may see him more as a role model than a rival.

Any chance of Phil M being the other VC? :)
