Dave Mackay

I only saw him play once, in a testimonial for Peter Sillett (ex Chelsea and England) and Mackay was retired just (I think). He was a mountain of a man and could still play, and by all accounts was one of the nicest people you could meet - a true legend of his era

He'd retired by the time I was born, but he is a Spurs legend.

An ex-pro friend of mine had known Dave Mackay since they were kids in Scotland.

On the occasion of a visit to WHL by my friend's team Dave welcomed him before the game and enquired if my pal had any spare "comps" as Dave had friends visiting. These were obtained and received very gratefully by Dave.

Five minutes in and the Tottenham left half truly clattered his old mate even giving him the famous snarl.

A true professional! What a player and one who I really do think would be equally successful in the modern game.

His short time managing the Blues was not a success largely due to matters outside his control but the fans didn't turn against him as he had earned so much respect during his time as a player for Spurs and Derby.

RIP Dave Mackay, a footballing great.

Was sad to read this earlier as when I was a kid he was a hero.

I have a vague recollection that in the 70s he won MotD goal of the season with a brilliant volley from about 30 yards out. Did I dream that bit or does anyone else remember?

Think you'd have dreamed it... Playing career would have ended in the very early '70s...

Would have been part of the successful Spurs teams of the '60s so at least one European medal some FA cup medals and a league championship to his name...

Good solid player and highly respected...

Seem to remember him and Bremner having a bit of a set to...

That was Allan Mullery,
My Dad always said Dave Mackay was one of the hardest footballers he'd ever seen RIP

He felt it showed him as nothing more than a bully.

Far from it... Back in the day the game was full of 'hard men'... There were times you just had to stand your ground or you would have been swept away... Don't remember players rolling around on the ground, after every tackle, to ensure they had 'won' a free kick...

That photo was taken after Billy Bremner had given McKay a smack on the leg that he had recently recovered from breaking in 3 places.

Spurs Legend. RIP.
