Custom Fitting

I went to see Scott gourlay too.
If I waited a month I would of ended up with the srixon irons
Not that mine ain't great I love them but srixons would of fraction of the price

If you play like Ads749r after the Silvermere fit you'll be laughing. The guy is unstoppable. Off to Ping for my 50th in June and looking forward to a good time and a full set. Been told in no uncertain terms by HID these are the last clubs I'm getting

I also went to Scott Gourley , he recommended Srixons . He could have sold me a dearer make, but said these would do the same job at almost half the price.

Scott is a class act. I went for a driver fitting and after the fitting he told me I didn't need a driver fitting, I needed some lessons.

Refused to take a penny off me and gave me the details of a great pro who I'm now getting lessons from.

Yip same here , I bought my new irons from him but he said my driver suited me just fine and gave me a few tips how to improve distance [ still in progress ].
But he really could have sold me some expensive driver , a good honest guy in my mind.

We had a Cobra demo day at our place today, went along for a hit and a quick fitting.

Loved the new F6 irons, but standard shaft was a bit balloon-y and didn't help my dispersion vs the Pings, both of which were around 12 yards.

Distance was comparable, I'm a short hitter with a girly average swing speed of just 72mph (7-iron) so my carry was around the 135yard mark. Standard lie saw me leak a few to the right, so fitter gave me a 2deg-upright head and a swapped the stock shaft for a KBS C Taper... and what a difference. Slightly heavier and stiffer shaft, but still classed regular flex, it slowed my swing speed down to an average 70mph, but gave me similar carry figures.

My dispersion though tightened right up and dropped from the rather scattergun 12 yards previously to a much more accurate 5 yards, which for a loss of an average 3 yards carry I can live with.

Now I have a decision to make...

I am getting myself custom fitted for new irons on Thursday, this is the first time i have done this and wanted some advice on what to expect and any previous experiences good or bad that people have had, also any questions i should be asking during the fitting.

I am having this done at Silvermere golf club in Surrey any of you guys been fitted there?

The cost is £60 but you get £40 back if you order new irons so for 20 quid i thought nothing to lose

I have been advised that taking six inches off my clubs might help. not with my game but they will fit in the bin easier.

Any advice greatly received

Thanks all
How was the fitting. Did you enjoy it.

Not sold on any custom fits I have had.

Reason I got a driver fitting and was fitted for a rocket balls stiff. And it was just OK. I then sold it and got myself a ping g20 tour stiff and it just feels much better. Now I know if I getting a fitting there is no way they put me with that driver.

Also when I got a iron fitting in a few different places for me it didn't work one place I was in a driving range bay using range balls. Pointless imo. Second place inside hitting into a net indoor and was just not comfortable doing it felt to enclosed..

For me only way to get a fitting is using the correct balls IE the balls you use normally. Then out on the grass hitting them.

Maybe it's just me but never come away satisfied with how I swing at this nor the clubs selected for me.

I fitted myself for the driver based on feel and its performs as I expected it would be on the course. Also last season I picked up a Adams xtd hybrid head and after seeking advise on here I selected a shaft that I'd never get fitted for on it. And it blows my fitted hybrid out of the water.

As I said maybe just me but I think if you have a basic understanding of your swing and then pick something that feels good you won't go to far wrong.

And forget about the computer says no!! Lol

Silvermere gets all the manufacturer custom fits down there - usually costs around £20 - which you get back if you buy clubs.

The Silvermere specific custom fit uses better balls though - z stars I think - I bought a set of Mizunos there and they gave me a session on trackman to test the clubs when I got them.

Thanks for all your input everyone, much appreciated.

The fitting was great fun and very interesting and for £20 was really a no brainer

I ended up with a second hand set of ping g30s at a very good price, was very close to buying the new ping g max irons but was advised that the difference between the two was very little but they were £400 more so delighted to now have the g30s.

For anyone considering getting a custom fitting from my point of view i would say its well worth doing and great fun.

I fully expect to get 45 points today with one eye shut and balancing on one leg

Nice one, delighted it went well and sounds like you got a good deal. 45 points for the front 9 I assume?

Happy golfing!

Where do you play? Expecting local witch hunts to out the bandit!

Fitting is part science, part art.
The science is understanding the numbers and figuring out what technical spec best suits the numbers. The art is further adjusting that spec to meet the technical and aesthetic prejudices and preferences of the organic blob. The first part may be easier than the second.

I think its more pseudoscience than science. Or 100% quakery.

The whole process of custom fitting is based on two false premises: one, that a set of club specs that best suit your swing can be determined by measurement, and two, that such a spec exists that will make you play your optimum golf. Its a sham. And the claims are outrageous and must border or actually breach trade descriptions law.

The custom fit fad is driven by :

- golfers leave no stone unturned seeking the promised land of better golf: and sense or rational analysis of facts is frequently left behind in this search
- there is a huge industry and business selling golf equipment to the (by and large rich in disposable cash) golfers of the world and it has become very adept at devising ways to part them with more of their cash
- few golfers, and indeed, few professional golfers have any knowledge of golf club/ball flight mechanics (its pretty easy to sell them any dream you can concoct)
- club pros latched (cleverly) onto the custom fit business as a way to win back business and offer a more tailored and personal-expertise experience from the takeover in gear selling by the megastore chains
- elite world players into it. And it may even make a difference to them. But then they are paid to say that so no impartiality there.

There are no true scientific analyses showing club fitting has a clear effect on the improvement of anyone's golf.

But as always in golf : if it adds to you enjoyment of the game of trying to hit a ball across a field - then go ahead.
