I have come to the conclusion that custom fitting is a lot of bollocks. I have had 4 done over the last 3 / 4 years and been fitted for something different everytime. Just stuck an R11 off the shelve into my bag with a Council shaft in it and im launching it at least 15 yrds further. So for that reason and that reason alone in out.

Boooooooooooooooom

Yep me too,
Stock 910D2 and best driver i have had.

Same with premium balls, been playing with a few different ones for a comparison and i'm buggered if i can tell the difference, I swear if you blanked out the name, you wouldn't have a clue.

Although i still like to tee up a provee for the big comps......just in case :D

Re: Custom fitting - stick it up yer bo**ocks

its funny you should say this. i have a friend who is a pro from direct golf say that he tries to push certain clubs on his customers (its all about the mark up)

one chap come into the shop for 14 clubs, a bag and clothing and wanted everything titleist (he would not be swayed) so my pal sold him £1600 worth of titlesit gear. 30 minutes later, head office was on the phone saying ''why have you sold him titlesit? you know the mark up is too low''

i wonder how many golfers have clubs in their bag that are not suitable?

Did any of it help you qualify for the CC knockout stages?????

A poor workman blames his tools. Your biggest problem is you change clubs more often than your socks so you'll never ever see any benefits of custom fit. Just get your game in shape for next Sunday ya rocket.

more from that butch harmon article that i posted that no one took the time to read ;)

THE ART OF THE CUSTOM-FIT

Dad did very well in all his club jobs, in part because they were the most prestigious jobs a pro could have. Thunderbird in Palm Springs, which was the winter job he took after leaving Seminole in Florida, was the best club in the desert for many years, a place where Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and Randolph Scott went to get away for the weekend. At Winged Foot, he owned the golf shop and kept 500 to 600 bags in storage at $25 a bag. His lesson book was as full as he wanted it to be, and he continued to play in a fair number of local and national events that paid relatively well.

Plus, he had members who supported him. There was no Costco or Golf Warehouse selling golf clubs and golf balls when Dad was a pro. If you wanted a new driver, you went to your local pro and bought what he recommended, and you paid full retail.
To give you an idea of how business operated in those days, Tommy Armour, who remained a member at Winged Foot long after he retired from competitive golf, told Dad every year that he needed to order 50 sets of Tommy Armour Silver Scot irons and woods, 25 sets with stiff shafts and 25 sets with regular shafts. Then, throughout the year, as Mr. Armour would play with members, they would always ask, "Tommy, what clubs do you think I should play?"
He would put his arm around any member who asked and say, "Tell you what I'm going to do. I'll call the factory this afternoon and order a custom set of clubs that suits your game perfectly. Don't worry about a thing. I'll take care of it."
After the round, Tommy would stick his head in the door of Dad's office and say, "Claude, in two weeks stick a set of regulars in Mr. Smith's bag." Dad sold 50 sets of Tommy Armour Silver Scots every year based on Mr. Armour's "custom-fitting" technique.

Your driving will be critiqued and added to this thread meatboz. I could probably right it now actually.

Aye JJF69 can putt Bob, I'll concede that.

Re: Custom fitting - stick it up yer bo**ocks

My problem with custom fitting is as a high handicapper I don't have the same repetitive swing every time I go out on course so what would be best fit one week wouldn't be the next. But I think it would work for the lower ones

Me neither - thats amateur golf mate. you cant expect anyone who works full time may have a family to simply pitch up once a week and have the same swing over and over. Guys on tour will be hitting baws in the thousands every week with a coach standing over them.

...and some of them still hit plenty of shoddy shots. I was custom fitted a few months ago, and it's absolutely benefitted me as my clubs were way too short. But the fitter said in not so many words there was little point in a high handicapper getting fitted as generally their swings were so inconsistent it was a fruitless task. I do think there's a lot of marketing theory involved. I'm not having a go at high handicappers by the way, just passing on what i was told. If you get fitted and it gives you the extra confidence then brilliant

Re: Custom fitting - stick it up yer bo**ocks

I've only been custom fitted once for irons, and i could have easily just got off the shelf as i was borderline stiff shaft, reg lie and leng. since then my swing has got better but less consistant, if that makes any sense!!:(

I con myself a high handicap and i don't think it would make any differnce unless i was 6ft 8 with very short arms;)

I'm exactly the same. The only thing that was really affecting me is that i am tall and have relatively short arms, so i had an extra 3/4 added. Apart from that everything was off the shelf. I played with my 16 year old blades all these years and got down to 5 with them again. They were regular shafts and obviously too short but i made them work. I've yet to score lower with my new irons. It's too easy to blame the clubs these days. I'm certain a pro could batter it round with a set of dunlops and score well

Re: Custom fitting - stick it up yer bo**ocks

and how well do we get fitted and with thw right gear,i remember Poulter saying when Cobra did he's a couple of years ago,he reckoned it would of cost about £25,000 !

Re: Custom fitting - stick it up yer bo**ocks

Been fitted and bougfht off the shelf. To be honest both seemed to work equally well. My R11 are off the shelf and I was bombing them miles further. However the TP's just look better and now the swing is in a good place I'm back with these. Yep - of the shelf as well. The two clubs I would look at though would be a driver and a putter. Arguably the money clubs and I think if you can get a driver with the optimum shaft and set up you will hit more fairways (with something approaching a repetitive swing). A custom fitting putter would be set to your swing and "could" make you a better putter. Odyssey do a great C/F at Chessington that I'd be interested in
