Custom fitting disappointment

From the fitting I had recently, I was told that he new 'hot face' and 'speed pocket' style clubs act kind of of like a trampoline, in that they do allow for a very small amount of face movement and it is this movement which gives inconsistent results in distance and dispersion, over that of a forged style head.

And Bri, I've got to admit, I'm a Mizuno fan now, loving my JPX's and at Rockliffe I saw you chatting them up, go on find a dealer and take some out on a date, may be just a one night stand, but then you could find a new mistress as well :D

In truth, it felt more like one huge big con! And the culprits; Taylormade. I went along because the results with my current 4&5 iron are not quite what I'd like to see. I explained this to the fitter, and then did a warm up with my 7 iron and the 7 iron S'blade that he recommended - same shaft in both.

The results; my 7 iron went 145 yds on a cold windy day. Speedblade 7 iron about the same. Then, after a static measurement, a 1/2" longer shaft was fitted, gaining 7 yds. Not a huge improvement but it tickled my interest a little.

Then he gave me the 4 iron to try... the results were appalling. I just couldn't get it up in the air.

Got home and Googled the specs. My Titliest 712cb 7 iron is 35* but the S'blade is 30.5*. I'd have thought the 4.5* difference would have given about 10yds + another 5yds for the extra half inch in the shaft. The difference in the 4 irons, mine is 24*, TM is 20*... and loft is supposed to be your friend...

In some respects it doesn't matter what the number on the bottom of the club is, nor the loft, so long as the end result is the ball goes how far, and where, you want it. BUT how can you honestly be comparing like for like if you're told to hit your 7 iron against their 7 iron?!!

That's 2 custom fit sessions I've had with TM, for irons, in the last few years, and both have been very disappointing. Still loving my bought 'off the shelf' SLDR though.

two things...

the part in bold intrigues me that a 4 h/capper cant get a 4 iron in the air- what was the shaft he used as 20* is prob double your driver.

secondly, I've had a few bad fittings, getting common unfortunately, after 5 strikes with mine and the proposed new iron one fitter looked at the shafts in my current irons and said "I think we'll just put the same shafts in the new irons":eek::eek:

my gasted has never been so flabbered:ooo:

I rented Rocketbladez 2 when I was in the Algarve in September and my first impression was 'these fly much higher' - couldn't say they went any further than my six year old Callaway irons but definitely higher - fine for a sunny, windless day in Portugal but hardly ideal for a links here - would be ideal for someone who struggles to get the ball in the air - my problem is the opposite.

I tried out Ping G25s on Monday and asked the pro if there was anything else I should try - he said new Callaways and Rocketbladez - so I'll be hitting them again tonight - will be interesting to see if my impression from September still applies when compared with another couple of sets of GI irons.
The Apex irons are really, really nice. I hit some the other week, with a couple of different shafts, and I'm now saving up!

Those apex just look like a mizuno copy , I'm gonna start saving for the mp54s might take me a while but they look even better than my mp53s

I hit the Apex better than I hit the Mizzies... which I was a little sad about, as I wanted to love the MP54s, but it's got to be head over heart with my irons (although I still refuse to buy the Nike Coverts which I hit really well, but just couldn't get over the size of the damn heads).

Whether or not the technology has any merit, the fitter shouldn't be recommending clubs that don't suit the OP as seems to be the case here. I have had 4 fittings in total over the years. 3 were for irons, all were terrible and as I was a relatively naive golfer at the time, I didn't understand enough about clubs, and shafts in particular to know it. Will know it better the next time thanks to GM and the forum. The fitting I had for driver was also disappointing as the range of options available to be tested was very limited, despite it being a "Tour Truck" (really a small van) experience. I keep reading about the great fittings people have, but more often than not the people I actually meet who have had fittings have been disappointed.
